Cool shot. I've always wondered what causes those growths on Pine trees. I wonder if it's tree cancer or something? LOL.

heron photos

Thank you for your compliments about my photos. I was very lucky to be able to get really close to the heron. I just hung out at the edge of the lake keeping very quiet and still and watched the heron for about 5 or 6 minutes. It was fascinating - he is such a graceful ,beautiful creature. As soon as I moved and rustled a leaf, he took off but unfortunately I was only able to snap his rear view so I have a great shot of his wings outstretched and reflected in the water, his feet poking out behind him,but sadly no head!! Needless to say I haven't shared" that one!

He is just grand and this is another gorgeous photo - were you able to get pretty close or did you use a zoom? - Everytime I try to get close enough to get a good photo they fly off.

Autumn at Occoneechee Mountain is great too!

Here's a couple of my faves I shot while visiting Occoneechee Mountain during the autumn season.

This photo above was taken along the crest of Occoneechee Mountain near the overlook on October 29, 2006. Along the crest are Chestnut Oaks, probably one of the largest stands of these in the state.

Below is another photo I took on November 5, 2005 where my boys (Brian and Anthony) are relaxing by the river below the mountain while launching leaf boats out into the calm and tranquil waters of the Eno. As you can probably tell, Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area is also a great place to take kids out to so they can enjoy a good taste of what nature has to offer.

My boys have been here enough over the years that they now know this mountain like the back of their hands as well as a lot of the history and folk lure here too. During the winter months when the foliage is down we love exploring amongst the relics left behind where the old mill village once stood along the northern flanks of the mountain before the homes were sold off by the mill owners in 1956 and moved across the Eno River to where they now reside in scattered locations throughout West Hillsborough.

Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area

Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area has probably more diversity (both in topography as well as ecosystems) packed within those few hundred acres than any other place in the state. I love the place in that I can always find plenty to photograph both large and small, and in all seasons as well. There's also a lot of history and interesting folk lure surronding this mountain too.

Likewise, I've probably got more photographs from this area than any other place in the state. For an example of one of the small things which can be found to photograph, here are some mushrooms I found on a cloudy day October 19th, 2006 at the base of the cliffs. On sunny days you would be extremely lucky to spot them being that they grow in well shaded areas but on cloudy days they stand out quite brightly since there aren't any contrasting shadows to hide them as effectively.

You'll love this place!

Once you get to know your way around the mountain and likewise the Eno River below you'll love this place! For instance, below the cliffs but still somewhat on the side of the mountain upstream along the Eno is a well hidden ravine known as the Panther's Den. In this ravine is a cave along the walls of the steepest slopes which at one time was the lair of the last remaining black panther to have lived upon the mountain until about the 1920's when somebody unknown (nobody ever fessed up to doing the deed) shot it dead after it's many nightly screeches scared the local residents of a nearby mill village which used to be located along the northern flank of the mountain.

And nearby the cave within a few feet of its entrance is a natural spring which trickles over moss-covered boulders on its way down to the Eno River below.

These two photo I took on January 8, 2007

These are great photos! I've wanted to visit this area for some time (especially after going to the Eno fourth of july celebrations for a while now). This provides added inspiration!
