Creek Laurels

Thanks! I was very fortuntate with my timing here when I made this photo as these blossoms were at their absolute prime. On the following day there was a layer of white petals upon the ground below and many of these blossoms were showing their signs of aging.

Circles

I really had not noticed this when photographing it, and I have photographed this stone more than a few occasions and finally coming up with a decent shot to post here.

But! ...my honest opinion is these patterns are probably due to the way the original stone was extracted from a much larger rock when it was first manufactured into something functional for those distant times.

Deja Vu - Possibly so!!

Some of the folks who bring their collections of hit & miss engines to display here also attend a lot of tractor pulls, etc throughout the state (and beyond) as well as the grand-daddy of them all, the annual Southeastern Old Threshers Reunion at Denton FarmPark in Davidson County, NC

...so it is quite possible you may have actually seen these same hit & miss engines in another place and time! :-)

Very interesting stone Java. It looks like it has some carved detailing around the edge(circles?).

Thanks!

That they did as always :-)

As usual, I filled up two memory cards in those two days while at the Crank-up. I was a bit hestitant at first to return Sunday on account of the weather but I am glad I did as the rains for the most part held off until the afternoon hours but when the occasional spells of drizzle would arrive and quickly pass earlier on, this just gave me the opportunity to spend more time taking photographs indoors and finally getting some decent indoor shots worth posting this year.

The lighting conditions inside the Freeman Cabin have always proven to be difficult in the past with no flash being not bright enough to really capture the true essence, but with flash tending to wash everything out. With my new camera I now have a mode where I can take two shots in rapid succession at once, one without flash, and one with just enough flash to fill in the shadows, and with each pair of images I get a choice of which one looks best, and thus a lot of interior photos from the Freeman Cabin that I had not been satisfied with in previous years.

As for many of the other attractions I have a lot of duplicate photos of the same things from previous years and some are better shots but I am not sure if I should just edit these as substitutes into my archives as replacements or whether to post these new photos as new extras... or just leave everything here as is. A quandary, Hmmm...(?)

One thing I did notice this year was there were a lot more people with cameras than in previous years and even some shooting videos to post on YouTube as I have found a batch of them already online and one made at North Cole Pottery's wood-fired kiln has a good capture of my boys passing by at the end of the video and as always with the ever-present and wonderful sound of that 50 HP Bessemer engine at the sawmill that can be heard all over the park :-)

Creek Laurels

Thanks for the compliments!

Many folks confuse creek laurels with mountain laurels but there is a difference if one looks close enough. Creek Laurels have less red in them and their budding blossoms are white compared to the pinkish red budding blossoms of mountain laurels, plus creek laurels tend to grow closer to creeks and in wetter environments than do mountain laurels. Also creek laurels have much fuller blossom clusters than do mountain laurels - in fact there is a creek laurel blossoming in the background of the photo I made of a vintage automobile at Ole Gilliam Mill Park that I posted just recently so one can see how full of blossoms these creek laurels really are.

View into another time

Thanks for the compliments! The whole park is like a village from yesteryear - probably the best in the state.

Before uploading these latest sets of photos from the Freeman Cabin I decided to go back and update all my tags from Ole Gilliam Mill Park which had photos from the Freeman Cabin by adding Freeman Cabin tags to the past photos so as to keep all these together under a separate tag for easier reference. By the way, I also did the same with all my North Cole Pottery photos too.

As for the rest of the Ole Gilliam Mill Park photos made this past weekend I really didn't find much of anything else that was not already previously posted from past years so I did not post many newer photos of things already photographed except for perhaps a couple better or more interesting ones. As for adding more tags I have yet to subdivide my Ole Gilliam Mill Park photos further... maybe someday I will get around to adding tags for perhaps the saw mill and the grist mill too but beyond this things may become a bit more complicated. Anyway all can still be found under the Ole Gilliam Mill Park tag but there are a lot of pages now thanks to jpo and myself :-)
