Wake County Animal Center Hot House

I witnessed shelter dogs in great distress throughout the summer of 2007. We are the voice of the voiceless. The public needs to keep an eye on Wake Animal Center...to be sure they keep making positive changes for the animals. Apathy means pain for the shelter dogs.

hot summer at the shelters

I can only hope we have a very mild summer. Last year, that month straight of 100+ degrees was horrible, even if you had a cushy home and air conditioning. The shelters were miserable, I am sure.

I'm really freakin jealous

I'm really freakin jealous that you were this close to Barack!! I'm dying to meet him. :) Did you talk to him when the camera wasn't rolling? If so, what did he have to say to you? I'm a little confused why he couldn't be on your blog since he's filmed all the time. Perhaps you could explain that a bit further to me. But, whatevs. I still love him!

Resized image

It looks to me like insect eggs. Each round casing would have thousands of eggs within- if this is the correct ID. Many insects lay eggs only on the underside of a leaf. When some species of insects lay eggs the larva hatch and feed on the leaves of the host plant. It would be interesting to watch and see what develops if it is nearby to you. If you know the species of the tree this might also give a clue to what insect it could be.

Things on leaf

If your image was resized and submitted so that it might be viewed in 'original' (larger magnification), you might get a better clue. The things appear to be the eggs of an insect.

gecko or salamander?

Thank you so much for this info-I forgot about using the museums in the area for advice-I submitted a photo of a snake that was living in the backyard a couple of years ago and they identified it for me.

I wondered after I posted the photo if perhaps it was a lizard so thanks for your suggestion!

It's neither Gecko nor salamander

I don't think it's a skink, either.

The herpetologists at the NC Museum of Natural Science would be go-to guys on this (you can submit questions and photos to them online), but I think what's striking a pose there for you is a glass lizard. It's not uncommon to see these sunning themselves on the sides of barns throughout the Piedmont countryside.

If you do approach a glass lizard, resist the urge to pick it up, as the unfortunate fellow is likely to lose his tail in the process -- a survival adaptation, and hence their common name. Not fatal for him, perhaps, but certainly not helpful, either.

Yellow Rose

Thanks! I think I did quite well too considering I cropped it from an original photo of a yellow rose in a paper bag at the flea market. The rose was beautiful but the background was less than desirable and cropping seemed to have fixed that problem. I was quite surprised by the results too!

that man!

No, I wasn't the one he was talking about who photographed the gate. Whomever it was must have used it for commercial purposes, I'm guessing? Anyway I do keep copies (actually multiple copies) of every photo I make on duplicate CDs - been doing this for years now. In fact I save all my faves in triplicate with 3 CDs! And yes, placing the date the photo was made somewhere in the file name sure does make things much easier when it comes time to relocate an old photograph again! Glad my ideas could be of assistance to you.
