Teachers Union??

What teachers union. There is no teachers union in NC, just an association that is useless. This state doesn't allow collective bargaining, the power of a union, for state employees. So get your facts straight and pay teachers what they deserve. How much do yo pay your plumber an hour? Now compare that to what a teacher makes an hour. And you still trust your kids to go to teachers all day long but will pay your plumber more.

The AG has it right. Federal law prohibits aiding and abetting illegal aliens.

It is absolutely ridiculous

It is absolutely ridiculous to grant any further means for illegal aliens to benefit from their illegal status. They need to return home, seek education in their nation, or do as many American citizens do every year and apply to universities and colleges outside of the United States.

Our Founding Father's Outlook on Immigration

Yes, that's true, but even our founding fathers would have found a better way to solve the issue. You can't satisfy everyone, but at least we can be fair and compassionate. I'm not seeing that attitude in most of these blogs.

Yeh, yeh, yeh all you so-called liberals

I'm white and I voted for Obama. A lot of people did because they are tired of the Clinton-Bush dynasty. That said, I wish the liberals would get off their self-righteous high horses, injecting race into every issue until we really don't know what the candidates are about, and how they are going to lead us out of the repression we're in. I DO NOT LIKE some of the burn-baby-burn radicals from the past who are showing up on Obama's bandwagon who will point the finger at me, a middle class person who has no choice about anything, just like they did back in the 1960s at our parents, blaming them for causing all the ills committed by the government. But frankly, no one is perfect in politics. We've been walking around with blinders on for years thinking all will get better, but it doesn't. We would all be quite surprised at a lot of the behind-the-sceners, if only the press would make it their business to dig up real dirt, but they're S-O-O enchanted with Monica Lewinsky, the NJ and Washington madams that they don't tell us what's actually going on in government. Britney Spears has another car accident, Angelina having twins, Brad getting a mysterious tattoo, Miley Cyrus posing nude...shall I go on? What, the press worry that the people want intelligent news about things that have dire consequences to us?

He is an absolute *%#hole.

He is an absolute *%#hole. In the proposal the stated that he appreciated and recogized the state employees and then in the same breath said 1.5% is that a joke or what. It is ridiculos, as if teachers are the only hard working state employee. I work in public safety in the largest county in NC. They expect us to risk our lives by going into these drug infested neighborhoods and all he want to give me is 1.5%, shoot that wont even cover my property taxes that is about $1850. oh yeah did I mention that I am a single parent and I do not recieve and kind of aid form the state.

Range of state employees

In response to Brett Burroughs' comment that teachers "do have the education unlike other state employees" and, therefore, should be paid more, I am amazed that this person does not understand that the education of state employees ranges from MD, JD, Ph.D, masters level, and all the way down to high school level. Most teachers have only bachelor level education, so they are far from the most educated state employees. When raises are given to only teachers, then the more educated state employees, who often hold critical positions, fall further and further behind when their salaries are compared to the private sector. They often leave for this reason and are very difficult to replace. I am tired of hearing the reasoning that teachers' pay is below the national average. The pay of many highly educated state employees is also below the national average and no one makes a fuss about that. Teachers work 10 months a year and get the equivalent of another month off during the school year when vacations are added in. I don't know of any other state employees who have such a generous work schedule. Most of us work 12 months a year and only get off the amonut of time we are entitled to in the state's leave policy, which tops out at about 5 weeks after 20 years of employment. The "part time" work schedule of teachers should be reflected in their salaries.

The lottery is not what you think it is

People get a little confused about the lottery and fiscal policy. All of the lottery net proceeds do go to education. The lottery earns about 30% on the dollar. So when politicians say that the lottery contributes directly to education, they are in fact telling the truth.

Here is what they are not saying. The budget for education is not increased in proportion with the amount that the lottery contributes. In numbers: (Use $50 million as an example). The lottery contributes the $50 million to the education budget (let's say $250 million total). You would think that the total budget would increase to $300 million. No. The $250 from the other sources (taxes) is then reduced by $50 so that the net budget is still $250. This gives the government $50 in taxes to spend elsewhere. (the majority of states that have lotteries do this now. I think Georgia is the only one that doesn't)

So to sum it all up. They do not lie when they say that all of the money goes to education. They just don't tell you that they allocate the other part of the pool to something else.

I'd love to see an N&O investigative report.

The third pig

Re: "Have to admit that i did not get today's comic with the 3 pigs"

The 3rd pig is usually held up as a model of foresight and prudence. But if the pigs are in a plane crash, the opposite is true, since the 1st and 2nd pig can keep warm with their building materials, but the 3rd pig can't burn bricks. No doubt the first two pigs will have the 3rd for dinner when they have to resort to cannibalism, hehe!

Of course, you have to assume that the pigs have all their house construction materials in their carry-on baggage. There's a thin line between absurd-and-funny and absurd-and-just-stupid. I fear that Argyle is more often than not in the second category.
