Its gone now

I drove by here today to show one of my boys this old water tower but sadly discovered that it was now gone. Whatever became of historic preservation in Wake County? Good thing I took some photos!

Awareness

One of the reasons I like posting photos like this is to create more awareness so people will know what is out there, and with more awareness there will hopefully be more historic preservation taking place.

Store restoration

I hope your dream comes true Java. This would be a wonderful asset to the area. I hope Durham reveres it's historic buildings more than Cary does. I am saddened almost daily by the ruthless development that is taking place in West and North Cary.

Catsburg Country Store

Its definitely one of those rare gems of Durham County (just north of Durham) and from what I can tell this place has a lot of wonderful potential, assuming that it is not allowed to deteriorate too much more before being restored for historic preservation - might even become a great tourist attraction too!

Front Door

I believe I may have inadvertently created a front door for all things related to the historic Endor Iron Furnace - just could not find a proper forum catagory to post it under which leads to an interesting point - I think we could make use of a few more forum catagories added here under perhaps one main topic with subcatagories such as the natural sciences, history and archaeology, art and entertainment, travel, etc. - anything with some kind of hierachical structure that makes it easy to navigate within this set of forums. Then this could be moved somehow without changing the URL and placed under the proper forum catagory. Hmm... they could add Lee County to the Town Square forums although I am not quite sure what defines the boundries of the Triangle area as I see they have Chatham County which borders Lee County at the Deep River and the Endor Iron Furnace is only a couple of hundred feet beyond the border. Anyway, just some ideas.

Boys

Thanks! ...and this is the third time they have been on a tour of the Endor Iron Furnace area too. In the past we had gone on hikes where the Triangle Land Conservancy and the Railroad House Historical Association had paired up for joint adventures in touring the place. As always, I try to give them exposure to as much healthy variety as possible, sharing the places, events, and the fine people I have encountered over the years as leaving it to chance would have made discovering these on their own vanishingly small considering all the other distractions kids are faced with nowadays.

Looking back when you first

Looking back when you first began posting photos of your boys on Share it seems I have watched them grow-up. Following in your footsteps by all appearances in this photo they have retained the appreciation for new adventures just as they did when they were little guys.

Glad you could make it

I am assuming that you probably spotted me and my boys though I have no idea which one of the folks attending was you. There was a good many folks at this hike, including a good number of younger folks and even kids too. Indeed a great turnout!

Anyway since I still cannot post any photos to the gallery due to continuing software issues here, I was however able to pick just one photo to post by another means - had to narrow my choices to just one for attachments so I picked the side of the Endor Iron Furnace that I had not yet posted a picture of.

See: http://share.triangle.com/node/27343

Love it :-)

I was there for about 30

I was there for about 30 minutes, but had to leave. I was amazed by the number of older people, I thought that was neat. :)

New Photos

I have pictures from the hike (which was actually quite comfortable in the shade and with a good turnout of folks attending too), but apparently there are bugs presently in the software here so I guess these photos will have to wait until another time. *sigh*

The heat and the furnace hike

I saw the forecast - it seems they are calling for 95 degrees (probably hotter as it usually the case with weather forecasts) around Sanford today and that will most likely be during the time of the tour too, but I work in this kind of heat too so at least for me its not anything I'm not accustomed to - just bring along plenty of water. The good thing is that most of the tour will be well shaded so thats a plus! As with past hikes recently they have brought along copies of the book "The Men of Endor - Their Works and Times, 1861-1876" and trust me this book is well worth the price (somewhere around $20 or $25 dollars?) as I recall. Lots of detailed info in this book too!! Plus the advantage of going on a guided tour is that the folks leading the tour will reveal a lot of information about the place (some not in the book) as well as the current status of the archaeological progress and new discoveries made as well - and some hands-on looks at some of the relics while explaining what they are and where they came from originally. Its a good bunch of folks and I think you'll be glad you made it if you do decide to go. My boys and I are planning on it this afternoon. At first they were a bit hesitant but after I told them about the new gravel road leading to within a few hundred yards of the furnace (where most of the interesting stuff as welll as shade is) they changed their tunes and wanted to go this time even though they have already been a number of times in the past :-)

I live right up the road

I live right up the road from there and I can't decide if I want to go or not? I've been to the furnace many times, but never on a tour like that. It's going to be hot and I could stay home in the AC and watch the race. What to do....what to do? LOL

Endor Iron Furnace hike

I just re-read the article again, and yes they did stop the gravel road a few hundered yards short of the furnace area and I believe they even have a new parking area at the end of the gravel road too. Even though the hike will be much shorter I wonder how many folks will be showing up? Its supposed to be quite hot on Sunday afternoon just like today and at least half of the folks I have seen attending these hikes in the past are older folks (over 50) too and often Worth Pickard (president of the Railroad House Historical Association) will join in on these events as well. Hmm... with potentially fewer folks attending I might have the time to ask more questions about the place and take even more updated photos than usual. I guess this awaits to be seen...
