Fly

I have never been able to get my camera this close to a fly without it buzzing off - well done! ...and another thing I have not been able to do is figure out, when a fly lands upon the ceiling does it do a half turn or a half roll?

Snake Plant flowery bloom

I have a snake plant and it has bloomed a few times the last three years or so. I did not write it down but I believe it does it about twice a year. The odd thing is at night the flowers would open up fully emitting a sweet smelling aroma similar to a gardenia, but during the day it will close back up. After chatting with someone at a nursery she told me the insect that is designed to polinate the plant must be active at night. Anyways in the past the flowers would last about two weeks and then dry up and fall off. Eventually the stalk will turn brown and dry and I would cut them off at the base.

Thank you for this. I have never seen a snake plant bloom and I thought there was something wrong with my plants when they decided to. Peace

Sleepy bees

I noticed a bee acting like this on a foxglove in Scotland this summer. Do they get "drunk" or are they sleepy?

Butterfly Weed

What you probably saw was the Butterfly Weed, a wild plant/wildflower. I bought my plant at a nursery and I think it is a cultavar of the wild plant. They are available in a variety of colors and my plant has grown to 3' since I bought it this spring. The wild plant grows about 12" or so high and has a shrub-like habit. I have posted both the orange and yellow varieties:

Do you know what kind of flower this is? The same flower was growing wild at the river - I had no idea what kind of flower it was but it was very beautiful.

Thanks Java!

Thanks Java! Practicing visual perspective and waiting for the right moment can make a big difference in the out come of the photo. But I'm sure you know that!

Not impressed when you hold tryouts with over 500 players and competing against other city/rec leagues that may have 50-75 players.

Thanks!

Thanks for making the nice compliments. The Black Swallowtail is a difficult one to photograph because it moves fast and pauses it's wings ever so briefly. If you're very patient though and don't make any sudden movements the butterflies will check you out then continue to feed around you.

I agree with Lilly this is a simple and yet beautiful shot! I love the butterfly's positioning - these guys are hard to catch because they always seem to be on the move.
