Moth

I first saw this unusual looking moth last year on a sedum plant and I only saw a few this year. Just as the sedum blooms were opening heavy rains ruined them and I was only able to get a few shots. This shot was made of the moth nectaring a wild aster. My research indicates their host plant is the Tree-Of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), introduced from China and considered by some to be an invasive species. On one of UNC TV's Exploring NC episodes this tree was included in a discussion about non-native invasive trees and plants in North Carolina. This doesn't exactly answer your question but I think it's an interesting topic. Thanks for the interest.

Very exotic looking, I’ve never seen this moth though I have noticed their webbed nests. How did you get him to land on a matching flower to make this beautiful image?

Thank you. My great grandmother used to be quite the gardener, but she is not able to get around very easily anymore. She is one of the people who got me interested in growing plants. She would always give me cuttings of whatever plants I wanted, and would always replace the ones I accidentally killed. So every now and then, I give her a plant that she is still able to care for, so she can still enjoy gardening. I didn't give her the rose though - she's had it for many years.
