Thanks! I had a huge variety, a rainbow might I say, to choose from as these sculpture towers were lit up in so many different colours (sometimes in many colours at once) throughout the event that after a bit of indecision I finally just picked red. Oh, and I cannot say enough good things about having a monopod to mount my camera on for photographing night time events such as this night time photo at Raleigh Wide Open 4 as they are so extremely mobile and work just as good as a tripod too!

By the way, about getting around some of the ongoing login hoops here - Aaaargh! - they keep changing!!!

Yellow Cows and lighting, and backgrounds

Adding to Art's comments -- Not only will incandescent lighting cause a yellowing effect, but contrast against whatever is in the background will cause these kinds of things with digital photography too beyond just the white balance. As an example, a couple of years ago I found a box filled with vintage fabric swatches from Dan River Mills at a local flea market. These were all stapled onto labeled index cards. As I photographed each and every one of them as part of a photo-documentation project, I noticed that the index cards they were stapled to would sometimes show up in an odd colour, especially if the fabric swatches had a lot of red or green in them but other colours also had a similar but less pronounced effect. What each fabric swatch's effect had on the colour of the background index card in each photo was always to tint the index card to be shaded towards the opposite colour that was the predominant colour in the fabric swatch. For example a fabric swatch that has a lot of bright red in it always made the index card look greenish, and vice-vera. Purple fabric on the card would always produce a yellow tint to the background card and vice-versa -- in other words always an opposite colour to the subject being photographed. As for film photography this does not seem to happen I guess because there is no software involved in the process of recording the input colours onto the film. Hope this helps a bit too.

Art,Thinking back to the area I was when I took this picture and thinking about your guesses I would have to say C because I dont edit my pictures except for size so what you see is what I see,and thinking again about the setting I was in I had more pictures come out with the yellowish tint and to be honest I didnt even notice the white in the background.Go figure.I never realized untill you made me take notice that artifical light has so much of an effect on a picture.I know or I should say I'm learning about different lightening and things but never thought that artifical light would make such a difference.I'm glad I posted the yellow cow because I sure learned alot Thank-you :)

different color lights?

LILLY, I think you are saying that the cow wasn't this color in real life. My first guess was that the white was not balanced for the lighting of the situation. Oddly, the in white jacket in the background looks fine.

Is it possible you were dealing with more than one light source, and that the lights had different colors?

Here's one combination of things that might make the cow look especially yellow. I'm making a series of guesses, so I realize I'm going out on a limb, and, lacking facts, could be wrong.

(Guess a) You have your camera set for automatic white balance. This function looks in your image for anything white, and balances the color so that that white thing will look white in the final picture. It usually does well, as in the chicks and little piggies pictures. And then ...

(Guess b) The jacket is lit from outside light through an open door. Your camera picks up the white in the sleeve and automatically adjusts to make that sleeve look white. And then ...

(Guess c) The cow is lit from artificial light (incandescent light bulb(s), not florescent), which as a very warm, yellow color. Normally, your camera would have adjusted to that yellowish color light (or tried to), but instead it adjusted to the white sleeve in the background. Your white was (automatically) balanced to outside light, but your subject was in incandescent light, so it looks yellow.

The cow was/is a tan-yellowish color.When I downloaded the picture I realized the color was funny looking but what you see is what I see.I dont like to edit my pictures except for the size.I think the color may look funny because of the lighting?
