It's not often I happen upon these turtles but it was a surprise when I found this one, and such a young one too. This box turtle also happened to be the subject of the first pictures I took that day and only minutes after one of my boys and I had started off on an adventure exploring the area around Gold Park in Hillsborough and which also turned out to be a banner day for interesting photos as well. He also learned a lot about turtles that day as I explained about the growth rings on the turtle's shell too.

Originally we had started out exploring a small creek running through Gold Park while collecting old glass shards from out of the creek bed to catalog an inventory of what was there and to learn a bit about the history of the entire creek basin from these shards (both my boys love hands-on outdoors educational adventures) and meanwhile helping to clean up old litter from the park too. It did not take long before things along the shore and in the woods near the creek also captured our attentions, starting with the box turtle and then finding the 'forgotten stairway' shortly thereafter. After a short walkabout in the woods nearby exploring these, we went back to exploring the creek bed again until we reached the other side of the railway overpass (I also explained the history, construction techniques, and age of this too) at which point we stopped as it seems the old glass shards were all located downstream from this point. Besides, upstream from that point was not only a navigational hazard but also appeared to be actively maintained private property as well. All said, it was quite an adventure and with lots of interesting things to photograph along the way.

Once home again we compared these glass shards we found to old bottles in my collection that I had started during the early 1980s. Its nice to see kids get interested in things other than the distracting abundance of electronic games that are out there in the world today. :-)

As for Gold Park (and its immediate surroundings), I think the place lives up to its name as we discovered this to be a gold mine for fun and interesting educational adventures too.

Very interesting information and shot! These little guys are my favorites! It is a joy to happen upon one. The last time one bumbled by I ran inside to grab my camera and by the time I got back outside he was long gone in the woods...so I guess they aren't really so slow after all!
