More historic stonework of a later vintage

Endor Iron Furnace: http://share.triangle.com/node/27343

In the link above there is an attachment as well as a tag for photos and texts for the historic Endor Iron Furnace located just north of Sanford along the banks of the Deep River. As is obvious in these photos the stone masons involved in this historic iron furnace's construction were of a whole different class as this structure was constructed using shaped stone that was quarried nearby to where the furnace was constructed. As for who the stone masons were that constructed this historic furnace the only thing I know to be certain is that these people were definitely very skilled at their craft as this furnace was also built using the dry-stacked method but with dimensional stone instead.

In conclusion, a lot has yet to be learned about the early history of North Carolina especially concerning the stone masons who were responsible for building many of the historic structures found throughout the state - might even make a very interesting history project to pursue!

Mystery leading into History: Footnote: another random nugget

After seeing the precise construction of these walls with what material was available and the test of time to prove that they were sound, this causes one to wonder when one finds similarly constructed walls of near equal age in some of the landscapes south of Gold Hill, NC.

Since not every man has the ability to do such precise stonework with what ever stone was available, this causes one to wonder just who these stone masons were?

Dr. Calvin Jones would certainly not have had such a skilled workforce at his disposal to then later after completing the wall, put to work in the fields for the rest of their lives as this would have been simply put, stupid. This suggests that Dr. Calvin Jones hired a stone mason with an abundance of cheap but skilled labour or was himself a stone mason with a skilled labour force which was employed on many similar projects throughout the state. This would also help explain the striking similarities found in the stone walls built south of Gold Hill too.

Below is a thumbnail photo (click for preview and caption) of one of the largest built sections of a great labyrinth of walls found south of Gold Hill.

Finding things like these - mysteries - makes one to wonder if History classes taught at our schools, colleges, and universities would not be much more interesting if the students were allowed to happen upon connections like these after having gone on a few (seemingly random to the students) field trips to explore and even photograph old and sometimes forgotten historic sites. This is only but one good reason for saving what remains of our history in North Carolina no matter how insignificant and often taken for granted it may seem to be.

Coffee is served.

I have been meaning to have an adventure in photography at the campus of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary ever since someone posted a photo of Binkley Chapel earlier this spring as all the years that I have driven right by the place I had yet to snap the first picture. I was on a mission! :o)

Nostalgic

I love the sepia tone and lighting! It gives the image a warm nostalgic feeling.

Framing the railroad tracks off center just slighly and having them turn off in the distance is an excellent composition (and having your eyes follow up to the water tower).

A New Jersey man says he’s alive today thanks to Jason Ray, the UNC Chapel Hill senior and Tar Heels mascot who died last month after he was struck by a vehicle.

Dennis Korzelius has Ray’s liver.

Ray, 21, suffered severe brain injuries when he was hit by an SUV while walking back to his hotel before an NCAA tournament game in New Jersey. He died March 26, leaving organs to five people.

“There is some comfort in knowing that even though your son is gone he’s got his organs supporting five other people’s lives,” Ray’s father, Emmitt Ray, told the Observer on Friday. “They could have all been gone by now. There is some good feeling about that.”
