good..i agree 100%..glad

good..i agree 100%..glad that smoking has been banned..because The youth of today are becoming more prone to smoking and drugs and there is a sharp increase in the number of drug addicts. It is indeed very important to make them aware of its consequences. The best way to get clean and sober is to engage in rehab centers and find a recovery support system that works for you.

4th of July

black people celebrating the 4th of july is like Native Americans celebrating thanksgiving...its like a black person voting Republican (not the old sytle pro human rights Republican Party of the 1800s but the anti-human rights Republican party of today). most holidays are consumer holidays and their purposes are long forgotten...People celebrate Christmas for gifts, not Jesus's birth. People celebrate thanksgiving, not to give thanks or for the Pilgrims (not that they are honestly worth celebrating in the first place), people celebrate for turkey and football. People enjoy MLK Day not to celebrate what he did but for the sheer fact one gets out of school (okay this only applies to students) its the same though with President's day. In the end, people either celebrate with no care for the history of each holiday, or people celebrate them with a distorted "white view" of history, which is usually incorrect.

My opinion is that I'm all

My opinion is that I'm all for a public option for sure. A conservative friend of mine who questions me frequently put a different spin on it and I suppose I agree with him that I think health care is more of a right.

European countries who have had experience with socialism have been able to create democracies that still have that spirit of taking care of everyone where our greedy capitalist system has failed. Why can't we learn a few lessons from them? Part of me thinks, though, that the only way to learn them is by living and appreciating (to some extent) socialism and that's never going to happen...

Debunking Canadian health care myths
http://www.denverpost.com/recommended/ci_12523427

Physicians for a National Health Program
http://www.pnhp.org/facts/single_payer_resources.php

Netherlands' Health Care Reflects National Values
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92641635

Series- Germany: Health Care for All
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91971170

If we just have a public option and don't overhaul the system and force all to change, what's the big deal? If the public option is fair and insurance companies go bankrupt or are forced to make changes, isn't that good? The only way to make them change is to mess with profits; they don't care about patients.

This link talks about how

This link talks about how the debates been going on since the Roosevelts and how even then any public option was demonized as socialism, threat to democracy, Communsit, etc. Interesting stuff. And there is nothing new under the sun...

AMA Opposition to Obama Public Health Plan Echoes Group’s Decades-Long Resistance to Healthcare Reform (demonization of universal health care)

http://www.democracynow.org/2009/6/12/ama_opposition_to_obama_public_health

AMY GOODMAN: Yes, that, the voice of actor Ronald Reagan, employed by the American Medical Association in their campaign entitled “Operation Coffee Cup” to stress that the government-sponsored health insurance system would lead to a form of socialism.

+++

Socialized Medicine: Polemic or Panacea?
http://www.lawcrossing.com/article/4077/Socialized-Medicine-Polemic-or-Panacea-/

The movement for universal coverage in the United States goes back to the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, who first proposed the idea. Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman also attempted to implement socialized medicine as part of their administrations' legislative accomplishments, but it was killed by a public campaign engineered by the American Medical Association which claimed, "Socialized medicine…will undermine the democratic form of government."

+++

A Canadian doctor diagnoses U.S. healthcare
The caricature of 'socialized medicine' is used by corporate interests to confuse Americans and maintain their bottom lines instead of patients' health.
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-rachlis3-2009aug03,0,538126.story

???

There are lots of "reasons" people post for NOT allowing hunting on Sunday. So why is hunting restricted on Sunday now? It's an old blue law, most of which have already been repealed. I go to church on Sunday and would love the option of spending part of my day enjoying the outdoors - hunting. The safety arguments are bunk - hunting is much safer than many other sports people freely enjoy every day of the week.

A word to other hunters - the anti-hunter LOVES it when they can get us to argue amongst ourselves. PLEASE keep your comments about TRUE hunters to yourself. Many of us that have been hunting all our lives are in situations where we can't be in the woods as much as we'd like. I don't need your approval and won't lose sleep if I never get it. Just like arguments over the type of hunting we do, the tools we use, etc. We should be a little more accepting of our differences and spend more time supporting each other. Think about it

Flawed Arguments

This comment is utterly ridiculous. You make it sound as if middle-school age children are simply bombs waiting to explode at any given moment. To say that books are responsible for middle schoolers raping each other is absolutely and unequivocally wrong. I could see where you could put forth an argument to that effect with TV, movies, or even music, but works of literature simply do not rank high upon the list of influences for the vast majority of middle schoolers. In addition, these "parents who care" (or rather, care about censoring the world for their children) in most cases have simply not read the book. This is inexcusable, because so many books have passages that, taken out of context, can seem much worse than they actually are. You have the right to regulate what your child reads, but keep your flawed ideals away from me.

Yep, you are right on this one, they are the moguls of rock music and they should be considered in very rock list. As a note of novelty young rock artists deserve a good reservation on that list too. I recently got a Paramore cd and it really got my attention, those kids have a lot to give.

This outing is sponsored by the Railroad House Association (Lee County's historical society) and entails a 1-mile walk (each way) to the furnace on a new road built by the National Guard.

We met at Raleigh Wide Open 4 about mid-day! I was the one who had the aussie outback hat (off but hung over my back) - just in case it rained - who brought along all the kids in tow. We talked about someway if possible of seemlessly combining Native American hoop dancing with hoop jams although the hoops are a bit different in width and size but the idea... if it could be done, it would be fantastic! Glad we met. :o)

Cheers!
(and happy hoop jamming too!)

slippery slope

I think I get what you are saying. Once you start adding things to pictures and deleting things from pictures, the picture ceases to be a record of what was there. It ceases to be a trustworthy window. If you abandon that link to reality, what's to stop anyone from going crazy? Add some sky, why not add some cloud, then why not add some building, then why not add some oak leaves, then why not add Sir Walter Raleigh, then why not add Prince Albert in a can?

I was talking with a friend a few weeks ago, and he was complimenting me on a picture. How did you get the sky to show up that way? he asked. The sky was from another picture I replied. I took 2 pictures of the scene, one light to get the foreground, one darker to get the sky. Then I combined the pictures. From his reaction, I might as well have said I cheated in medical school. He obviously felt fooled, embarassed and a little angry.

If people are uncomfortable with that level of editing-- combining exposures of a scene that are really there, they would be horrified by the stuff that seems to be common practice among professional photographers, such as removing skin blemishes and distracting background objects and adding blue sky.

It's this discomfort that causes contests to have rules against editing. Having tried to follow these rules, I'd say they are so vague that they are difficult to follow and probably impossible to enforce. The rule-makers seem no clearer than anyone else on where the line should be drawn.

Here's my question on the other side. If our goal is to show accurately what is there, what about portraiture? Can we justify using flattering lighting? Should we light the subject to show as many wrinkles and blemishes as possible?

I sympathize with my mortified friend. I certainly don't want t fool anyone. On the other hand, I would not be happy just taking pictures that were realistic windows to reality. If it makes a better picture to digitally remove a parked car in the background, I want to do it. To me, it's part of the craft.

Maybe it's like what they say about sausages -- that to enjoy a sausage, it helps not to know exactly what went into it. Maybe, but I sure hope not.

pointy pinnacle

I know what you mean about the professional perspective of photography concerning the use of editing as I think what the professionals are attempting to achieve are works of art, not neccessarily accurate portrayals of reality per se, but a reasonable facsimile thereof that also looks good. Sometimes the editing can go so far as to cross the border into becoming an illustration too, such as the promotional illustration recently published on banners downtown as well as in print in the papers by Landon Elmore Design & Marketing for the Raleigh Convention Center promoting Raleigh Wide Open 4 - Celebrate City Plaza.

Website: www.RaleighConvention.com/RWO4

I do like their rendition of City Plaza in their promotional illustrations on banners as well as in print in the N&O! I wonder if they plan to sell any souvenir posters of their promotional illustration as a keepsake for those enjoying the event? I know I would purchase one for myself if available to add to my small collection I have on a wall dedicated to such posters.

Now as for my take on editing, I tend to go between two far extremes - either no editing whatsoever except perhaps an occasional cropping or editing to the point where there is no doubt in anyones mind that the photo has been edited, but thats just me.
