Posting Photos

When editing a photo to post here, what works in terms of size and resolution. I shoot everything in RAW and convert to jpg after editing, but it can still be a fairly large file. I see in the FAQ that they resize, but is there a limit before uploading?

Posting difficulties

You were still able to post "the drought of 2007" on August 28, 2007, but that's the only one I can see lately, whether logged in or not.

To sum up the posting difficulties I know of at this time:

1 - Posting from Preview may look like it works but in fact fails. When your entry is ready, just hit SUBMIT.

2 - Posting was likely successful if your increased points showed up in the next window. However, your photos in the gallery may sometimes only become visible to you and other users who are logged in. If that's the case, some dummy editing and posting again will give you another chance at public exposure. However, if that works the photos will show at their original positions in the gallery, that may be several pages forward from the latest entry.

3 - Photos posted on a Friday may not appear before the next Monday.

Looking forward to seeing more of your pictures, good luck!

Duplicate image file names

One other possibility is there may be duplicate image file names already onsite here and as one should know there cannot be more than one file name with the same name as an image URLs here since this site preserves the originally uploaded file name and simply adds it onto the final file name for the photo's URL. One remedy however may be to resubmit you image but type in your username and the date of your photo somewhere in the image file name before uploading it. This will make the file name unique. Hope this helps.

Other Tags

Basically these are used to clarify the location in which the photo was taken (although some have abused it and posted multiple locations not even related to where the photo was taken but forunately only cities), and with the clarification one can choose various topics such as antiques for instance, or a specific park, etc. Then all one has to do to see other photos from this same place or topic is to simply click on the tag when viewing a photo they like - this will enable the viewer to see all the related photos under the specific topic listed under 'Other Tags'.

A good example is one of my own photos with a tag used to specify Ole Gilliam Mill Park (although I had to go back and edit a handful of my earlier photos to add this tag so they too should be showing up soon, maybe Monday if not before).

Here is the link to this photo so you can check it out (and have great read while there too) and then click on the Ole Gilliam Mill Park tag to see other photos from Ole Gilliam Mill Park - more photos should reappear as soon as they go through the moderator(s) so stay tuned.

http://share.triangle.com/node/8672

By the way, I think I've turn that one photo into a blog thanks to Joe Miller's link typo in his Reedy Creek blog which directed folks to that photo instead of a thread here which was only 4 digets off... so I took this as an opportunity to use as a plug during the meantime, at least until he discovers his typo. :o)

Editing Opportunity Missing

This is off-topic but still pertaining to this thread. In another thread, when I am logged in, all my previous entries show with an edit button. In this thread, only one of my entries as of today shows with an edit button, and it is not even the last one! What's the rule on the delayed editing opportunity? Is this a random problem?

H and V margins

These are basically the number of pixels used for spacing around the inserted photo - this is *supposed to be* particularly useful when embedding a photo into the message body of the text here to keep the texts from being jammed up against the photo(s), however not all the other functions which would normally be associated with this will work here thus making it almost useless. I have however found one use for the H and V margins (same thing as Vspace and Hspace when using HTML) - I have found that it works good (if you know the number of pixels to use) for centering a photo within the body of your texts. One problem though I have noticed is that this function only displays on a select number of computers or operating systems(?)s but when viewed on another the photo no longer appears centered but aligned left as though nothing was entered into the H margin at all. Also I noticed a number of the HTML tags which are stated to be allowed here do not work for me, such as the center function (therefor my solution of using Hspace instead to do the same thing)... but only able to be viewed on certain types of OS or perhaps browser types(?). For me, I know the H and V margin functions work for Windows XP using IE6 as a browser.

What I would love to do here is to be able to type up everything in HTML in the message field and then preview it before posting and have enough HTML functions available to make it worth my time, especially image tags such as alignment (left, right, and center), width, and of course Vspace and Hspace. This would enable the resizing of photos as well as the placement of photos to be nested into the texts... just like what one can find when viewing a simple web page.

A few more HTML functions for the texts would be nice too, such as a selection of fonts (which are easy on the eyes) to use as well as font sizes perhaps up to 4. Personally I find it much easier to type up everything in raw HTML than to use the limted functions of the buttons above the text field. Can there be some way to combine the both of these into a workable format to use here, plus an automatic HTML checker in the preview window to make sure all the tags are properly closed? Just something to think about...

Personally I would love to have the ability to make my posts with embedded photos look as professional and eye-appealing as possible.

Inserting a photo in a forum comment

Among the how-to explanations that should be added to the FAQ list, I'd like to see the procedure I am going to try right now, that is to add a picture to a forum comment. I am now going to click on the above tree-looking button (insert/edit image) and add a URL for a picture of a good-looking llama from the public gallery. I am not going to use the URL in the address bar of the photo gallery but the one given in the photo property of the thumbnail (to keep it small here), that is right-click on the picture, see properties and cut and paste the true picture URL. Note that the URL for the preview size could be used too, but do not use the URL for the original if bigger than preview size). I'll pick a position somewhat to the left (I have no clue what the border and H and V margin units are..., will assume inches) and should be about to post the comment. Hum! I wonder if preview is going to work here... First update, I can see a quarter inch border in the editing window but it does not show in the preview, nor do I see much of the vertical and horizontal space I selected... but overall it worked. Second update, the legend I entered for the picture is showing when running the cursor over the picture (here, llama by NonMar). I also noticed that the picture positioning cursor in the editing window is disabled.

Pictures reappeared after editing

Success! The two pictures I could only see after being logged in, which I then edited a bit, are now showing in the public gallery at their old position, that is following Crystal's Tatoo already 5 pages behind the latest picture as of today. The other four pictures in the same case as mine (bunny, vacancy, tomato anyone, squash, by dbhorne and roebuckp) are still visible only after login...

Like a blueprint cut up into jigsaw pieces and packaged in a box

Don't you just love the challeges to conquer here?

At first it was frustrating when I arrived, and I almost left...
Then one night I just randomly tried to post something without even previewing it.

WhaLaa! It was like Oh! Now I get it :o)

Since I love these kinds of challenges, that's why I stuck around. And since I was already well armed with both 35mm and multimegapixel ammunition, I figured I's fire off a few rounds of shots. And I'm still enjoying putting all these random puzzle pieces of the master blueprint together, one piece or sometimes more than one piec at a time. After a while you can begin to be able to interpolated what the missing pieces are and then go hunting from there.

It might be interesting to see if I could save a copy of one of my preview images and then sharpen it up, then upload it under another unique file name to get it reposted. Since the orginal image size would be exactly the same as the preview size no resizing would be required, and even if it went through the resizing software, it would still come up virtually unchanged. I think this challenge just might could be quite rewarding.

Oh, and another idea, kind of an extention on the idea of embedding photos within the texts of comments to create a whole story around one main picture. Could we use a slide show option around here? Can that option be found somewhere amongst the blueprint pieces remaining yet to be put together? Darm, I wish the HTML functions would work for me here as I cannot even access them... or haven't discovered just 'how' yet!!!

But in the meantime, since I've got this photo of a random bull still lost deep within Middle Earth inside my user photo gallery only visible to me and a very few select others after I have logged in, I might just save a copy of the preview image and sharpen it up a bit and put my little theory to the test at hand. Ah, these challenges are sure hitting my sweet spot! :o)

Will check posting after minor editing

I just made minor changes to the description (body) of the 2 photos that did not post to the public gallery (but where visible to me after login), then hit post without preview. They disappeared all right from my logged-in view. I'll see what happens to them in a day or two... In case they are not back publicly again, one is Sunset over Dorton Arena (on the 4th of July), the other is Pink Waterlily (at JC Raulston arboretum). They must have been viewed by logged-in users because the hit count of each went up since they "half-posted" on August 13.

Location

Personally I use this field to tell where my photo was taken. It does kind of overlap with the other tags though as you can also type more specific locations in there as well, plus anything which might be related to the image. I have however noticed that some folks have used the tags incorrectly by posting numerous locations in them for one photo and this really defeats the purpose if you ask me. Go figure.
