have you even remotely heard anything about this trial? the woman was a liar who changed her story every time a stiff breeze blew. they had no dna evidence that was worth anything... they had nothing but a hooker trying to make some extra take from three rich white boys.

Selective Recall

I think history will treat Mr. Nifong more generously. His few, minor prosecutorial peccadillos seem harmless to me [compared to others, e.g. Michael Easley in the Gell case.] And doesn't anyone remember one Lacrosse defense attorney saying that "these guys are a group of young boys filled with 'raging hormones' and he would be afraid of where he'd step in that house." [Stated preemptively before the DNA report came back, if any players' DNA would be found on that girl.] The Nifong "hooligan" charge is lame compared to this. Goes to show that people do have selective memories.

Nifong consequences

I would be rather dissapointed if Mr. Nifing were not to go to jail for his despicable behavior. After all, through his unethical and illegal acts he was attempting to jail 3 innocent students for 20 years. It would not be a just result if he were to slip quietly into retirement and receive a hefty pension check from the state for life. At the very least, I think his behavior warrants the loss of his pension. This may sound harsh to some, but as an analogy think about a CIA employee who reveals US government secrets to another country. If that were discovered in that person's 29th year of employment should he/she receive a pension from the US government for life? I should think not. So, in my view, if a state employee abuses the power of their position to engage in illegal and currupt and immoral behavior aimed against the public as he has done, he should lose his pension rights. Second, he should be required to repay the families the 3+ million they spent to defend their kids even if this means being forced to sell his house, etc. His pension check should be turned over to these families until the debt is paid off. Perhaps this might mean he and/or his wife would have to take a low paid job to survive which would be fine by me. Finally, any monies earned through a book/movie deal by Nifong should be awared to the families (as was recently the case for OJ Simpson). --Jon

duke professors

The group of Duke professors who wrote and signed the letter condemning the lacrosse players...without facts...should also pay a very high price for their actions.

Jumping on the "hang em high" lynch mob, nifong, cable news band wagon ....without and in spite of the facts....blows my mind....especially for so called educated professors....at a university of the caliber that Duke is supposed to be.

Or just maybe... those many Duke professors truly do represent future US business leaders...of whom they are supposed to be teaching ethics to......dirty, ignorant and anything for a big buck.

How many other innocents are in jail?

One wonders if this is really the first and only time Nifone has done thisto "get a conviction and another notch in his belt" - how many innocent folks are in Durham's jail because they lacked the resources to bring out the truth? Although it will be arduous and expensive, Durham and NC should undertake a review of every case Nifone ever prosecuted to see if others merit in depth review/retrial.

Houston, you've got a problem

The silence from the Duke Gang of 88 is deafening. Has anyone from the News & Observer, the Duke Chronicle or any other media outlet made any effort to get any of these pathetic Marxists to talk about their outrageous behavior last year? Are they so embittered and cowardly that not one in 88 is willing to discuss the group's unconscionable actions?

An enterprising reporter might want to begin by trying to get in touch with Houston Baker, the nitwit English "professor" at Duke who led the Gang of 88 charge. Baker, you may recall, got a lot of media attention when he referred to the three innocent Duke defendants as "farm animals" in an e-mail exchange with one of their mothers.

Baker is now a "distinguished university professor" at Vanderbilt in Nashville. His scholarship doesn't amount to much of substance, but he appears to be a master at manipulating liberal white guilt and landing plum positions at elite (but terribly gullible) Southern universities. If you Google him, you'll find plenty to scare you: The man appears to be consumed by race and class hatred. Duke alums and Duke parents really ought to take a good look at him before they write another check to Duke. There are plenty like him still teaching at the school.

Anyway, if any of y'all would like to drop "Professor" Houston a line and say howdy, here's his e-mail address at Vandy: houston.a.baker@Vanderbilt.Edu

If you want to check out his home page and photo, go to http://sitemason.vanderbilt.edu/site/iGxZW8

Darn, is it just me or does that photo bear an uncanny resemblance to Buckwheat?

Brodhead should step down

A university of Duke's caliber deserves a president with some substance, someone who has integrity, intelligence, and courage, someone who does not act out of conditioned response, but out of reasoned conclusions. That someone is not Richard Brodhead. Brodhead should try to acquire the dignity and elegance to just step down.

Here is a question. Is this the first time he did this or is it the first time he got caught? Will this open up a new can of worms regarding all of the people before that he prosecuted. Can they come back and ask for a retrial? If so how much more with this cost the taxpayers? I have a feeling this is long from over.

RE: god bless you...

Let's show some respect please. IF anyone is to use God's name, please be aware that it is ALWAYS capitalized. I would also point out, that if we use the word, that we reflect on God's life and what it is all about. God was about forgiveness. His whole life was based on this one word. We would not want to give other's the wrong impression about GOD by spouting off words of anger and negativity when using God in text.

Nifong being disbarred

While prosecutor mike nifong got exactly what he disserved it is an absolute shame that the president of duke university did not get a similar punishment. He totally abandoned his students and lacrosse coach in the most gross manner. He absolutely does not deserve the position of university president. Actually any university..........much less duke U.................................SamPIII

I agree with your remarks -

I agree with your remarks - especially about President Broadhead and the Gang of 88. His remarks printed in the Raleigh-Durham paper this morning about how the University was damaged by Mr. Nifong's acions were enough to make one sick. The Duke Board of Directors need to demand his resignation and establish some sort of censure policy for the faculty that will prevent such actions from occurring again. This does not impinge on free speech - their actions were tantamount to yelling fire in a crowded theatre.
