First of all, Darfur is a terrible tragedy, albeit one of many around the world today. With that said...

Sarcasm on:

These people have been killing each other for centuries. These people won't step up and pull their own weight. These congressmen's sons and daughters should be in the U.S. Military force if we go to Darfur. Our volunteer military should decide whether to go to Darfur, and not our congressmen.

Sarcasm off.

Seriously, these congressmen want to run from Iraq, which is supposedly in a humanitarian crisis now that will get worse if we leave prematurely, to go to Darfur. Iraq is strategically important to the U.S., Darfur is not. We need to work on what's best for the U.S., and not on some “feel good, politically correct by liberal standards” situation. To drop Iraq for Darfur is not wise for the U.S., and these men are not making sound decisions. To want to pull forces from Iraq to send to Darfur is hypocrisy at its height.

It is convienent that Congressmen Butterfield and Miller forgot to mention the amount of work the Bush administration has put into having the UN send in a military force that has teeth into the Dafur region. Pres. Bush has spoken out about this issue for months, and in fact has challenged the UNs credibility on this issue. To me, it confirms the uselessness of the UN. The Chinese, who want oil that is sited in the Dafur region, could care less that thousands of Africans are being sytematicatically murdered and via their veto can block any UN resolution that would help the refugees. In fact, this inaction is so typical of the UN as to be laughable, if it wasn't so depressing.

If Butterfield and Miller want to wait for the UN, the 'problem' of Dafur will be solved ... the Arab nomadic tribes and the Sudanese government will have wipped out the African pastoral tribes in Dafur. Thereby controlling the oil wealth that is located primarily in the south.
