the formula is free....

A Nation Without Borders Is Not A Nation - Ronald Reagan

Cost effective? The formula the mother feeds the baby is free ... that's the point ... the formula companies had been giving all the mothers a diapger bag filled with "goodies" including the baby formula trying to snare customers for the formula at the hospital and UNC is deciding to stop being an advertising gimmick for these companies by no longer handing out the Gift Packs prepared by these companies.

so uninformed

If anyone would like to debate the PCB dioxin thing, give me a time and place.....First, the explanations that the formula has contaminants in it is also an excuse to forget about the problem. Read about BioAccumulation ladies.....key word....in utero, it's the blood, feeding....not the fatty breast milk. Once again, the breast milk is where the contaminants bioaccumulate.....they tests you are relying on.... target only 7 key dioxin toxic congeners ...there are 17 very important congeners....Then there are the PCB's....which YES were outlawed years ago and I continue to make my living testing the environment for the compounds today!....THEY are everywhere...for example CRABTREE LAKE......Ward Transformer for a local referral......EVERY utility company in America is STILL cleaning up the PCB's since that were outlawed....I LOVE THEM...I make my living because they exist......But I wouldn't want to feed them to an infant if I could avoid it....

Now....The bioaccumulation factor......The poor vietnamese did get the high dose, but honey 20 years of small doses will build up in every individual...Out of all the participants of these studies that every one refers to .......NOT one tested NEGATIVE for dioxins or pcb's.....NOT one......They are there....And yes, you may be a lucky one with lower levels, but if you have been exposed IT will not leave your body ever.....It remains there...that is why it is so toxic......So.....ONCE again, all of those who say, no problem with PCB's, dioxins, etc. in breast milk....FINE.....

I know better......and so do many more.......Go for it.!

pcbs and dioxins in breast milk?

A Nation Without Borders Is Not A Nation - Ronald Reagan

Uuuuh, I think someone's confusing "countries". In Vietnam where we saturated the countryside with Agent Orange and 4,000,000 people were contaminated with dioxins .... yeah ... their breast milk might have some dioxins in them because the mother is suffering from dioxin poisoning ... and will probably die from it.

PCBS? In the United States? Puleeze ... they've been outlawed since 1985. If you've got enough PCBs in you to end up in your breast milk, then Honeys ... you've got more problems than you know.

Maybe you need to have a Tox Screening before you get pregnant, heh? I'll bet your insurance company would pay for that one if a doctor required it.

Breast feed your children for as long as you can but not too long. If you work for example and only have 6 weeks off, then Breast Feed for 6 weeks and then go to formula or as long as you can ... but stop breastfeeding after 6 months or well before a year is up. This notion of breastfeeding for as long as they want it is ...OMIGOD ... so disgusting.

totally agree

Please be aware that the hospitals are not oulawing formula. They are just preparing to stop the free promotional samples from the formula companies. I see nothing wrong with this. Obviously, the hospital will have formula available to families who choose or need it. But it won't be free and there will be no cute little bags going home to new breastfeeding mothers in hopes of swaying them to supplement with bottles when they get tired.

I am not against formula. I know it is a necessary alternative for *some* mothers. But I also think this society has made it way too easy for new moms to quit breastfeeding early on. The N&O article pointed out that in NC more than 70% of moms to be intend on breastfeeding and by 8wks post, less than 50% are still breastfeeding - and I'm willing to bet a much lower number are exclusivley BF-ing. The purpose of the pro-breastfeeding hospital policy is to give the new moms the support they need to be successful without sending conflicting messages.

As for toxins in the breastmilk - the toxins are also being passed on to the baby through the environment: air, water, the bottles the formula is stored in, etc. Also remember that any toxins in the milk would have also been passed in-utero. A quick search on the internet regarding toxins in breastmilk reveal that no one yet knows what safe levels are. Yes, the levels in the environment and in people are increasing but that does not necessarily translate to adverse effects. And almost all scientific sites, including the CDC, warn against discouraging BF-ing based on potential toxin risk. It's a ridiculous notion that formula is better than breastmilk simply because the mom can pass some toxins.

The increase in a variety of childhood conditions including allergies, autism, pdd, adhd, etc. has nothing to do with breastfeeding. This is pretty obvious when one looks at the the number of babies actually being breastfed for any length of time is such a small section of the population as well as the research showing that extended BF babies have higher IQ's and less schooling problems, not more.

Making generalizations based on perosnal experiences ("I was bottle fed and I turned out fine") offers no valuable information - Firstly, where is the comparison? What exactly defines "fine" and were BF babies of the same era more or less "fine" We don't have the answers to those questions, at least not past answers but new research is showing that there are differences between BF and formula fed babies and that the differences are significant enough to strongly recommend BF-ing for the 1st year and beyond.

toxins in Breast Milk

Ladies, I am all for breast feeding healthy milk to an infant. This decision by UNC most likely has more to do with becoming "Cost Effective", than Breast Feeding Friendly. We all believe in nature's way....but the truth is, there are toxins in your breast milk..If they wanted to ensure the best possible nourishment for your child this screening would be required....Is your level high enough to harm your child?

Childhood diseases that have no defined cause? Would you like to have a test for your breast milk prior to feeding your infant at their most critical period of development? Or just take "their" word for it.....This is my only question.....

Our insurance doesn't cover these tests and no one promotes the screening....It's important and I don't think women are made aware of these risk as they should be.

toxins in Breast Milk

I respectfully agree that a healthy breastmilk has benefits for an infant. And there is certainly a debate within the health community and research organizations about the specific levels of risk. As with every science, there is funding and there are those who pose much to gain and those who pose much to lose in the resulting research. Global warming is a perfect example. The truth is, the environmental factors are most difficult to prove because of their chronic nature. Risk aren't always acute and immediately recognizable to us. In addition, the analytical testing provided in most of this research tends to target only a small number of specific congeners of the toxins for Dioxins and PCB's. Thus, the results may not provide the broadest contaminant possibilities. And if I were to refer you to the EPA and other university research organizations on this topic, you would first hand see the limitations of the funding and resources to rule the topic out of concern. The research for dioxin in breast milk still raises concern with regard to specific carcinogenic compounds.

ADD, Autism, childhood cancers, all are being caused by something. Something no one can explain. If it's possible that it could be in the breast milk, shouldn't or wouldn't every mother just like to be reassured with a simple screening analysis.

This is a serious and highly debated issue.....And my point is to consider the real possibilities. One test could reassure a mother that her milk is safe and beneficial to her child. Has ANY ONE had a Dr. to provide such a screening option prior to her decision regarding this important matter? I would really like to hear from you.

Environmental problems are taboo.....And Insurance doesn't cover the testing.

Sincerely.....

Anyone against breastfeeding solely for "toxicity" reasons should remember that studies point to the overwhelming benefits of breastfeeding, in spite of the chemicals which might be present.

And formula isn't necessarily any safer:

http://www.nrdc.org/breastmilk/formula.asp

http://www.newstarget.com/019338.html

A 2005 study says, "The presence of environmental chemicals in human milk does not necessarily indicate health risks for infants, according to researchers." Source: http://www.news-medical.net/?id=13244

Another very well-written article about the subject states, "Although the children who were breast-fed had higher PCB levels than children who were exposed only in utero, they consistently performed better than those who drank formula. ... In other words, breast milk appears to be at least partly protective against the effects of toxic chemicals. In fact, the World Health Organization and other groups continue to recommend breast-feeding for all women." Source: http://www.mindfully.org/Health/2005/Toxic-Breast-Milk9jan05.htm

The FDA, World Health Organization and American Academy of Pediatrics all recommend breast feeding.

toxins in Breast Milk

Become Aware!!!

Having worked in the environmental toxicity industry for 20 years, I am still baffled that no one addresses the common issue of Breast Milk safety. There are known carcinogens that collect specifically in a mother's breast milk. EVERY mother has a predisposed amount of such toxins as pcb's, dioxins, and other harmful compounds that bioaccumulate over the years.

We test our water....why not breast milk. I know there are cost effective ways to screen for this today that didn't use to be available. WHY would you feed your child breast milk without a check for the levels of these compounds that are stored specifically in Breast Milk?

How about a little awareness to this issue!

That's a beautiful presentation of the benefits. But did you screen for the levels of dioxin and PCB's in your breast milk before you began feeding the infant? I agree that nature is a great thing, but honey, your milk is contaminated with our industrial pollutants and the health community knows this.....just read the EPA and CDC information regarding breast milk. If any mother breast feeds without a test for certain carcinogens, she may be doing far more harm in development than good.....

The intention is to go with nature and I agree, but we have unfortunately altered our environment from ALL natural!
