August 08 test comics

Dog Eat Doug is a sweet, funny, and beautifully drawn strip that's been part of my daily online routine for a couple of years, and I hope you'll keep it in the N&O.

The Wizard of Id is a lot like Peanuts to me - painfully obligatory, and that's not a reason to take up space.

You should run another strip called "One Big Happy" by Rick Detorie - it's wonderful!

And could you puh-leeze stop squashing Drabble?

Pooch Cafe, Knight Life and Scary Gary were worth a try since they are popular somewhere ( I don't know where). But I can't find much to like about any of them. Maybe if the "in heat" story line finally came to an end, we could get a better view of Pooch.

For now, thanks for the try and I look forward to the next three. And thanks for NOT reducing the comics pages while the rest of the N&O shrinks.

We can't give someone a chance (or even contact you) without some more information.

We'd be happy to take a look at your son's sample strips. He can e-mail samples to me, along with contact information at thad.ogburn@newsobserver.com. Or, he can mail me samples to Thad Ogburn, The News & Observer, 215 S. McDowell St., Raleigh, NC 27609

We've received some samples from time to time, but most weren't usuable because they:

1. Were an odd size that didn't fit the format

2. Had inappropriate content (sexual, racial, etc.)

3. Were copies of characters created by other cartoonists.

But if the cartoons are something original, are in the correct size and are suitable for a family newspaper, we're happy to take a look.

After viewing these comics...I can't say I like any of them.

My son has created a much funnier & clever comic. So if you want to add something better than these...give a NC boy a chance.

POOCH CAFE - has potential
SCARY GARY and NIGHT LIFE - stink - ditch them!

PEARLS BEFORE SWINE - terrific!
MALLARD FILMORE - love it!
LIO - grows on you

Enjoyed DEFROCKED. Also, some of the one panels tried
earlier in the year.

I much appreciate the expanded comics since everything else in the N&O has shrunk!

"Pooch Cafe" has impressed me. Even though the whole "in heat" storylinehas been going on for too long, the strips are still consistently funny.

"The Knight Life" just hasn't been very funny or creative.

"Scary Gary" isn't great, but it's good. It wouldn't bother me if it didn't make the cut, but I'd enjoy it if it did get added.

Pooch Cafe has inappropriate content for the comics. My young kids love to read the funnies, but I'd prefer that sexual innuendos not be thrown at them on a daily basis. Please remove this, and find a less offensive one!

Pitiful strips

Just joined the forum and was rather amazed to find ANY support for "Pearl Before Swine." No typo, unlike every issue of the N&O, I've only found one Pearl (funny strip) since it began and I read every comic every day. "Lio" only has one or two themes, and they have long since been beat to death, as should the cartoonists for both these strips. Ooops, a violent thought--caused no doubt by these unfunny comics.

About the guest strips: most have been OK, but the current three are the lamest ones yet. We can do better.

Deflocked - funniest new strip I've read lately

I don't look into these comics as deeply as some, but I'm officially a huge fan of Deflocked. I know too many people like that sheep and I love the dog's dry humor. And as far as Pearls - I don't think Deflocked is any more of a copy of Pearls as Pearls is of Get Fuzzy. Rat is Bucky, Pig is Satchel and Goat is Wilco. I guess we can all see similar themes in things if we want to.

Anyway, this strip is consistently funny (and smart) and that's enough for me.

We'll be testing three guest comics — "Dog Eat Doug," "Tina's Groove" and "Wizard of Id" — on Mondays-Saturdays from August 11 through Sept 6. Those that are positively received will be invited back for a reader vote later this year. So, what do you think of the new guest strips?
