Revolutionary War Living History Day - Saturday, February 20, 2010

Full Description:

10am-4pm on the grounds of the Alexander Dickson House (ca 1790), 150 E. King St., Hillsborough, NC. Continental, British and militia reenactors will demonstrate camp life during the Revolutionary War and commemorate General Cornwallis’ encampment in Hillsborough in February 1781. Events include marching drills, musket-firing demonstrations, open-flame cooking, and guided tours of Hillsborough’s colonial and Revolutionary War sites. The event is free and open to the public. Endor Iron Furnace Hike Sunday, November 8, 2009

Join local historian Edwin Patterson as he spins the tale of the Endor Furnace and the industrial history of the Deep River. This outing is sponsored by the Railroad House Association (Lee County's historical society) and entails a 1-mile walk (each way) to the furnace on a new road built by the National Guard.

Registration not required.

We met at Raleigh Wide Open 4 about mid-day! I was the one who had the aussie outback hat (off but hung over my back) - just in case it rained - who brought along all the kids in tow. We talked about someway if possible of seemlessly combining Native American hoop dancing with hoop jams although the hoops are a bit different in width and size but the idea... if it could be done, it would be fantastic! Glad we met. :o)

On the 26th at 1:00pm there will be a CATPA tractor pull (points pull) - Saturday is also usually the best day as they have a fairly large crowd in attendance, not too big to make it overly crowded but just enough to make things most interesting.

Gates open at 10 am Saturday, noon on Sunday - closes at 10:00pm each day. Admission is $6 - kids 6 and under and seniors over 65 just $1. For more information, contact Duane Hart at (919) 837-5363.

Stop by the Hoop Jam each Weds from 6:30pm until dark at Pullen Park in Raleigh. We meet near the stone gazebo; enter from Ashe Ave, go up the hill past the aquatic center and listen for the drums. Extra hula hoops provided. Bring a musical instrument if you like, plus a chair. Or, just enjoy being outdoors.

The weather turned out to be much better than expected today at Ole Gilliam Mill Park and I took tons of photos while there today but only uploaded a few that were hopefuly not duplicates from previous years. Once again its almost that time of year for the annual Ole Mill Crank-Up at Ole Gilliam Mill Park located about 4 miles west of Sanford along Hwy 42. This year it will be the 29th annual Ole Mill Crank-Up which will be as always the weekend after Mother's Day, this year on the 16th and 17th of May, 2009.

OK, so I've employed the gnomes with coffee (again) for advertising this upcoming event as any other photos used would have probably been repeats as well from a huge selection already buried deep within my photo gallery here. So... these gnomes do get around don't they!

Paparazzi Calendar - Mountain Laurels and Rhododendrons

Just thought I would add this in here for those who like nature photography. The first week of May is usually a prime week for photographing the mountain laurels and rhododendrons at Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area at Hillsborough. Since the rhododendrons are more localized than the mountain laurels the best area for photographing these is close to the Eno River below the base of the mountain itself especially near the sharp bend in the river upstream from the cliffs below the overlook area. For those unfamiliar with the park, trail maps are available in a small grey box near the entrance to the parking area.

By the way I am fairly confident that this event will be held as scheduled as there are numerous websites promoting it this year. The link above is from the Haw River Assembly site itself.

Java, if you're interested in foreign film, especially one about photography and artistic expression, then there's a flick out that might act as consolation prize for the flopped jazz event.

"Everlasting Moments" is a Swedish period piece about a woman's rediscovery both of a forgotten camera and an untapped creative gift within herself.

Roger Ebert and Kenneth Turan give it glowing reviews.

I think its time we start a Share Triangle Paparazzi Calendar of Events forum where we can post upcoming family-freindly events that are also good for photography. This way we can all know what photo opportunities that kids to adults can attend are coming up for those who can make it.

And remember those rubber band wrist bands for identification. I knew there had to be a good alternative use for all those N&O rubber bands I have been accumulating from my daily paper deliveries!
