Voting

So, BTW I registered and voted this morning at Wake Tech. I was amazed at just how easy it was. This actually concerned me because there were no questions as to how long I lived somewhere. All I needed was a driver's license... and as we all know that anyone can walk into a dmv and get a license. It is a felony to vote if you are not a citizen, however, there is also a "don't ask don't tell" policy when registering to vote.

Take from it what you will, but i was pretty sure I saw Mickey Mouse voting ahead of me.....

Hold on...if this was your first time voting and you didnt put your drivers license number on the registration (just a social security number), then you would have to should some form of ID or utility bill proving you are who you say you are.

Voting fraud

I believe that early voting and the way mass registrations are allowed all can lead to fraud. And the comment that no fraud has been detected begs the question. How much effort is actually put into determining voter fraud? The election boards have barely enough personel to handle registration and voting. Checking for fraud? I doubt if any but the most superficial attempt is made to determine if fraud is occurring. Only the most blatant case would be detected. All these attempts to "make it easier" to vote also makes it easier to commit fraud. I'm sure I could do it, but as it is a felony and no claim of "testing" the system would be recognized, I don't feel it's worth the repercusions.
By the way, if 97% of the white voters were to choose McCain, I'm sure it would be claimed as racist. But 97% of black voters going for Obama? Hardly gets a comment.

Voter Suppression

Heide, you are so right. Election fraud, aka voter suppression, is a much greater threat to the election process. The statistics bear that out.

Plus, people keep failing to mention that ACORN is required by some states' laws to turn in every last form that was filled out, bogus or not. In fact, many of those bogus ones were FLAGGED BY ACORN itself before being turned in. But the GOP likes to ignore that fact.

early voting results

Where are the updated NC early voting results? If over half of one million people have already voted we must be able to find some sort of tally. Also, does the Obama campaign have a lawyer at each of the early voting sites as he plans to do at the usual sites around our nation? To guard against more voter fraud - as we saw in 2000.

If you have not lived

Fletch
If you have not lived at the address for at least 30 days, you cannot register and vote on the same day. You can register, fill out a provisional ballot, but the law states that if you "move" you must have lived at that address for at least 30 days to be eligible to vote. If you have questions, you should call the Board of Elections because you are not informed as to the procedures that are in place that would catch the fraud that you are showing as examples. Please call the Board of Elections and they will explain how they have those conditions covered. Also, please don't try it because you will be prosecuted. It is a felony and you sound like you are a concerned citizen.

Early Voting

Early voting is no different than voting on election day. Everything is handled exactly the same. This type of article seems directed at intimidating voters and lowering voter turnout. With so many people wanting to vote in this election, if we all waited until election day, we would be waiting all day, with many people giving up and leaving before voting. Go out and vote early!!!

you all need to be a shame of yourselves. you all know that obama voters can't vote twice. if that was true, we would have voted twice when bush became president twice. what i'm saying, do this make any since!

Wrong characterization

I am an independent voter and wish that the fringe people would be more respectful and try to get their points across with the facts not insightful demagoguery. Get involved in the political process and learn the issues. If you exaggerate and make false claims you destroy your credibility and weaken your position. Try to get your point across in an intelligent way people might actually listen. Free speech can also be accurate and truthful. Give it a try.

YAY, early voting

The plusses of early voting FAR outweigh the minuses:

1) Lines are much, much shorter on Election Day. In the past, many times people would see the long lines, and decide to go home instead of staying to vote. Now, we get almost a month to find a time (and location).

2) even if you might be able to spend all day on Election Day in line, what happens if you wake up that day with a 103 fever, or your car won't start? I had a friend whose father died the day before the election one year, and my friend had to miss voting to leave town. If you vote early, there is much less chance of something coming up on Election Day to prevent you from voting.

3) If indeed voter suppression IS going on, it's better to find out at an early voting site than on Election Day when everyone is way too swamped and stressed to stop and deal with it. If there is ANY issue with my record, I want to know about it well in time to take care of it before Election Day.

4) Similarly, if there are glitches in the voting machines themselves, this can be detected early when crowds are smaller and there is still time to funnel the crowds to another location while the machines are fixed.

The main disadvantage I can think of is that with people from all over the county in the same place, there is a potential for a poll worker to hand someone the wrong ballot. But, there seemed to be a double-check on that where two workers verified the correct ballot.

voting twice or more

How would the NC Election Board be able to track down if I voted more than once using the following process? I vote early is Wilson County where I live. I go and change my address on my Drivers license to my mother's address in Raleigh. I then take my new drivers license and register and vote in Wake county early voting. I basically would be voting twice and if I really wanted to try a third time I could possibly change my address again to a different county in NC where a relative lives and vote there as well. Isn't this a possibility? I just may try it and see what happens. Fletch

Is one-stop, early voting worth risk, cost?

On Thursday, voters across the state can begin voting in this year’s general election, casting ballots from the top of the ballot, the presidential race, to local elections. Citizens can even register to vote and vote on the same day. Critics have warned that one-stop, early voting could allow for election fraud. Is the one-stop voting procedure, begun in 2007, worth the risk and cost? Or should we go back to everyone voting on the same day?
