It is very apparent that you have strong feelings about what I have said. The only point that I was trying to make, and guess I didn't succeed, was that the money spent on the portrait did not come from the patients' funds--but from the employee part of vending. What I did not want to share but now feel like I should is that I have a close family member who is currently at Dix and suffers from a severe depressive disorder that requires hospitalization within the state system from time to time. Please know that I was not trying to downplay mental illness or promote Miss America. I was trying to defend the character of those who get up every morning and go to work in an underfunded system that criticizes instead of rewards. I've never been to an Estee Lauder counter and consider beauty to come from within not outer beauty. Please accept my apologies if I have offended you.

I just returned from Dorothea Dix tonight after visiting my brother. My life with mental illness began 12-1980.

Would someone please comment to the reason why Christian took the funds from the patient's vending machine money.

We are barely middle class now but I still mail my brother money, buy his clothes, shoestrings, shirts, shoes, pens, tablets,etc. We took him a pizza today amd cokes.
Before I retired, it would take me 5 years to make what
Christian did in a year.

IF SHE TRULY STOLE MONEY FROM THESE PATIENTS, LET US SEE WHAT THE SBI DOES. During the past 28 years, I have bought socks and sweatshirts for ALL the patients on my brother's
ward at Broughten. My Sunday School class helped me to
gather up a lot of the clothes.

I CANNOT FATHOM WHAT CHRISTIAN WAS THINKING. I WOULD KILL
FOR HER EDUCATION AND SALARY. I NEVER HAD THE CHANCE TO
ACQUIRE NEITHER.

CHRISTIAN needs to make a statement to the families
of the mentally ill who struggle to make life a little
easier for their loved one. IF THIS IS TRUE, THERE WILL
HAVE TO BE DIFFERNT DEGREES OF HEAT IN HELL, BECAUSE SOME WILL WARRANT IT JUST A "TAD HOTTER."

It's a sad day for the MANY supporters of Dr. Christian. Unfortunately, we can not openly , in front of cameras etc, express our support for fear of someone saying we were fraternizing, or trying to "brown nose" or distorting our motives for expressing our support. Many of the recent "concerns" expressed regarding the DDH/JUH move have been greatly distorted. Distortions based on incomplete and often inaccurate information that serve to meet personal agendas and needs. I'ts not really about patient care concerns. What happened to loyalty to the "person" who pays you (in this case the state of NC); for being part of the solution when things need to be improved upon and not the problem (As we all know, there is always room for improvement in any organization); and going to work somewhere else if your beliefs conflict with your employers? Dr. Christian, YOU WILL BE MISSED BY MANY WHO REALLY KNOW YOU.

OK everyone lets get something straight, before you go making fun of the way people look or talking crap about someones talent you need to know the whole story. What you all need to know is that the picture of Patsy Christian that the News and Observer as been so rudely plastering all over the paper was taken by a camera phone, that is why it is so distorted. It was taken by a sad litle excuse of a person that has a vendeta against Christian.

It's not only the big guys...take a look at the state
parks and recreation good old guy racket. Mechanics sitting around doing nothing for weeks. Everybody gets a turn with the credit card. Go to lowes buy some tools put them in your truck and take them home the state will pay for them...They never do inventories. If you are a drunk ranger (even head honcho) and get caught driving drunk they just transfer you.

She knew she was stealing money that was allocated for patients. And, THIS is the person that should be the Director at CRH, the new hospital or any hospital for that matter?? Very easy to see that she thinks of herself before patients or anyone else. Would YOU like working under this person? She she be terminated, but she won't. That's just state government bureaucratic BS for 'ya. I worked at Dix. I know.

Can the N&O find out how much she has to spend in the "secret" vending profits account @ JUH & DDH ? BTW, where does the parking ticket or registration $$$$ really go ? ( I wish I had $5.00 for every car parked on the DHHS campus ) or is that another secret account for, quick and dirty items needed by the wrecking crew sent from JUH to trash whats left of DDH.

Do any of these people answer to anyone? Isn't this lady going to get about 60-70 thousand in retirement off that 120 thousand salary. Oh! By-the-way: Did she take one of the myriad categories of time state emloyees like her have at their disposal. Do you wonder if they just take the time and never categorize it? If there is an investigation, you can bet the answer coming forth on any question as to why? will be: Well, you know the cost of the bronze plaque with her name on it would have been 7 thousand dollars or more. Looks like we got a very good deal!!!!!!!

Let us not forget that several years ago during another state budget crisis, the legislative clowns discovered $50,000 in the Dix patient vending account. Yep! They took every last red cent and never paid it back.

If injustices are occuring they should be reported to Dempy Benton not to the N&O! If YOU knew Patsy was getting her nails done on state time why did YOU report it to her supervisor? Finally, the people under Patsy do owe her something and that is RESPECT!

I don't doubt the N&O are going after an award, but this story is a part of major crisis in our mental healthcare system. It is a mere example (and one of the less important ones) of how the administration and leadership is not focusing on what really needs to be done. Maybe you think the story is the wrong focus. Maybe it is, but it seems to be the only thing that is getting the public to pay attention to what is really wrong - which is that the people of NC - both consumers and taxpayers are getting the shaft from this mental health care system.

This portrait captures the essential core of so many of the ambitious: their vanity is out of proportion to their intellectual capacity ... oh, and their integrity, too.
