Taxes and everything else is

Taxes and everything else is out of control. We retirees have a budget and live within our means. Where is some relief for Seniors? Tax relief is only for a few. In South Carolina, property tax is based on age rather than income, and $50,000 is automatically deducted from the assessed value. I am tired of waste and corruption which takes money out of my pocket. Durham County Resident.

Durham must not raise tax rate

I'm the kind of person who understands that taxes are necessary and it cost money to provide services to a city. But Durham must keep its word and not raise taxes after promising the revaluations would be tax neutral. Even with that, some people (like me) are probably going to be screwed because their propery went up in value more than others. I don't live in a mansion. My taxes last year before the revaluation were nearly $500/month. Rediculous!!! City services are not that great! They think my house appreciated by nearly 50% in 3 years, when in reality I would be lucky to sell it now for a %20 increase from previous valuation. And now they say the rate is going up to?? I think these folks don't have a clue, particularly when I keep hearing about "downtown projects" of various kinds (like a baseball museum??) getting hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. It really makes me want to leave Durham, and if my taxes go up, I might be forced to do just that at a bad time for me... -- David

Durham property tax bills would rise 11 percent, if the City Council adopts City Manager Patrick Baker's proposed $356 million budget. Baker's proposal is $18 million higher than the current fiscal year's budget.

What do you think?
