Rutherford wasn't thinking of firing him if you read he states that his meeting with Laviolette is a yearly meeting and there really was no debate or questioning of his staying or going...it was just a check up meeting ...

on another note even if he had thought about it you can't blame him for thinking about if he had because we have missed the playoffs 2 years in a row no team has done that after winning a cup...but all in all we all know and agree with the injuries and issues that came up he did great this year and with a healthy team we all expect better things next year

How many times are you people going to ask this question. There are six openings in the NHL at this time and the reason none of them are filled is because Peter Laviolette would have been the first choice for probably all of them. We have the best Coach in the NHL in Raleigh and be happy that we have him.

Fire him and my season tickets are gone. Simple. Rutherford bears sole responsibility for one of the largest mistakes of the season. Who kept Graham which resulted in Cam starting so many games..It wasn't Lavi..that was JR

Also, picking on the earlier lull in Oct/Nov..wasn't that addressed and superceded by the kind of play that occured from Feb 14th. That's analagous to a teacher giving a test to a student in Nov 2007 and the student gets 50% but then in April the same student gets 99% and it is completely discounted. Ridiculous.

This is typical GM crap..the only thing they can really do is fire the coach but if JR thinks there is not going to be fan fallout if that happens, he has another thing coming.

Why would I pay for 44 games next year with no expectation that this team will work well under the style of another coach.

Answer: I wouldn't.

My only beef with Lavi was trying to bring back some of the players from the injured list too fast..but then how do you treat the hat trick from LaRose who also came off a broken leg..you can't, it's all second guessing.

I'm sure he'll get a "performance feedback" but I don't see him being fired.
1. JR is right, the lull from November-Feb. was poor. I think some nights he wasn't all there.
2. At the end, why did Lavi bench the Rats who made the end-of-season streak and instead play the injured stars? MADE NO SENSE.
3. PP needs a facelift. We can't have 2 forwards playing point anymore in Lavi's PP system - it's too risky to be stuck with a forward trying to backcheck a PK breakaway. Hopefully another Corvo-type aquisition will solve that issue (and dump Kaberle).

I don't think these things are worth a re-hire.

Yes, Rutherford had done a good job of trading players, however, overall his draft choices have generally been miserable !!( 2 exceptions in 10 years )
Aren't all the teams now in the quarte finals built with new draft choices...maybe it's time to get rid of Rutherford!

Despite massive amounts of freak injuries and shakeups, he has made the team competitive every year. Cut the man a break and keep him. He is certainly one of the finest coaches in the game.

NO WAY. Why fire a coach that took once a struggling team and turn them into Stanley Cup Champions? Yeah not making the playoffs for the past 2 is painfull but there have been countless injuries and such but Peter Laviolette is great for the canes.
