RE: Spell Check (or cheque)

I agree most definitely! I just corrected one of my captions and now I have to wait again for the mods to repost the photo, and it was one of my better shots too! Go figure. (I guess I was in a hurry when I uploaded that one!)

BTW, I use the Queen's English and American English interchangeably depending upon whom it I am typing with and the Queen's English especially on international message boards - makes the reading much easier and the differences in slang doesn't create as many problems if one knows about them! In other words I never mention a certain type of dance contest often held at the North Carolina beaches each summer when on international sites for obvious reasons! LOL

Spell Check (or is it cheque!!)

Hear ,Hear (or is it here, here??) LOL. I agree,I would benefit enormously from a spell check button, not because I spell things the British English way, but because I cannot type to save my life ,so a spell check button would improve my captions and comments.

Spell Check

Sometimes I think it would be nice if we had a spell check button for our photo captions just so we don't have to wait for the photo to be posted before an error can be corrected and maybe even a choice of spell check options too - the Queen's English and American English since both are used here.

Plenty of times

...but mostly from online storage websites such as Shutterfy, Photobucket, PBase and the likes. I guess its because many of those kinds of sites require people to sign up before they can leave a comment or contact you about a picture. But if you hotlink a picture from one of those kinds of sites to a public message board you'll get more requests for use since the people who visit the message boards are most often already members and have the ability to send a private message or whatever.

In a nutshell, general if asked I would assume most people would say yes to allowing their photos to be used. At least I know its that way with me.

I've had one that I know of...

...printed in the Eastern Wake News that I didn't know about until after it came out in print:

But that's OK with me. Some of the folks I work with got a real kick out of seeing it :)

...but usually they ask first.

when the original is the avatar

It looks like if the image is really small, the site does not issue a separate avatar and original link. I guess there would be no point.

My 5-year-old asked me, if you remember a dream about something that really happened, how do you know if you are remembering what really happened or the dream?

resolution

I'm really pleased with the increased clarity of my pictures when I upload smaller versions. Also, I'm thinking that an image that has only .2 megepixels would have limited value to anyone else. They could not enter it into a contest, use it for a brouchure, or even pretend they took it. Ok, they could pretend they took it. In any case, I do not want anyone using my images without my permission.

As for the newspaper using pictures, I'm not so worried about that. I figure they would let me know and give me credit. Does any one know if they ask permission? Given their terms, I guess they would have to.

Here's a link to some helpful comments (related to one of my pictures) from Java55 on this issue.

RE: copyright vs. property

There always seems to be that one case out there for just about everything (but this was her personal website as you say)... but here if you think about it, the N&O can redistribute anyone's uploaded image(s) posted here so in effect its possible for everybody in their entire circulation to receive a copy, so in a nutshell if one doesn't want a particular photo to be redistributed simply don't upload it.

4 MEG limit

That's probably why they have the 4 MEG limit on uploaded photos. Usually serious contest photos can take up quite a few megabytes. One way to solve part of a problem is to copy your original into something like MS Paint and save it as a .JPEG file before uploading it. You wont notice much difference in image quality visually but the file will be a good bit smaller and yet retain the camera information if it isn't edited beyond just copying it. Since you would have the much larger original, you'd have the best quality image and yet be able to share an image that's useful, looks good, and uploads faster too. For the very best resolution saving the image in .TIFF format is the way to go but all but the very smallest images pixel-wise would fall under the 4 MEG limit... and besides I don't think this site accepts images in .TIFF format... so that's kind of a mute subject I guess.

copyright vs property

Thanks for pointing out the terms. I had not read them, nor was I aware they were there. I usually don't read directions, and of course it gets me into trouble. I'm pretty concerned about people using my stuff without crediting me, and seeing that policy makes me feel better.

I remember hearing about a large company paying compensation to a little girl whose image they had taken off her website and used for advertising. It sounds from that like calling material "property" may be pretty powerful, even if it isn't really copyrighted.

Downloaded photos

Can anyone speculate as to how defined the resolution would be on downloaded photos. I always assumed that the resolution would be very poor and anything I might consider for instance contest material would not have quality resolution if downloaded.

Copyrighted?

From: http://www.triangle.com/about/terms/

A couple of small quotes out of a huge page:

"The statements, opinions and views expressed in user-contributed areas are the property of the individual/individuals contributing the infomation. The News & Observer makes no claims to the veracity or usefulness of material submitted and published by individual users."

"You will not reuse, republish or otherwise distribute the content or any modified or altered versions of it, whether over the Internet or otherwise, and whether or not for payment, without the express written permission of The News & Observer or the copyright holder."

* * *

As for myself anything I post online is fair game for anyone who might find a use for it to help promote their organizations, events, clubs, etc., or even to decorate their homes with photos I make. I know a lot of others (propbably most) may feel otherwise concerning their own photos but after so many years of posting photos online into public galleries and even hot-linking them to public websites although not from here because I don't want to bog down an already bogged down server, plus the preview images aren't the best quality. A good suggestion (as stated above) to those wanting to use other people's photos would be to ask the user who posted them first (login under an account and send a private message - it seems visitors can send messages but there is no way for the software here to allow a response back) just to make sure its OK. This would eliminate a lot of surprises for those who aren't accustomed to having their photos show up on other websites, etc. - plus in my personal case it would help to let me know how and where they are being used so that I would have some kind of idea how useful my photos are in general and after a while be able to figure out what types of topics are most popular as well.

I couldn't find anything on this site saying that the materials posted are copyrighted. What does that mean (or did I miss something)? How do people feel about posting their stuff up to a place where anyone can download it?

Continuations of Comments Beyond Photo Captions

A catch-all place to continue lengthy or somewhat related discussions beyond the usual comments under captions for photos posted in the main gallery here -- just check the date posted and/or the topic name for easier reference to the photo in question and perhaps if possible post a thumbnail of the photo with the continuing questions, comments, and/or other discussions in reference to each photo. And its alright if this become a long linear thread over time. It could lead to some interesting reading as time goes on.

And with this being said and this new topic now created, we all now have a place to continue discussions where in the past it may have seemed somewhat awkward.
