I would put Bill Self in the top 5. He is a GREAT recruiter, good game day coach, great teacher. He adapts well to the players strengths, loves defense (which wins championships),stresses toughness, and is loyal. I like the fact that he, Calapari, and Williams don't do alot of micromanaging during the game, and let their players play. Stuff which they have worked out in practices.

The Davidson coach?

That's an interesting one. Not saying he's a bad guy but if it weren't for Curry taking them to another level, his name wouldn't even be in the conversation. Plus if he was such a good coach, their last play against Kansas wouldn't have been Curry bringing the ball up and passing for someone to take a 30-footer.

Best Coaches

Coach K is one of the best in a historical sense; his recent record makes him slightly above mediocre (and yes I am a Duke fan). Overall, Pat Summitt is the best followed by Billy Donovan (he had talent and WON with it!). Bob McKillop (Davidson) is third. I would take any of the aforementioned as a tounrament coach. If you want a regular season coach, give me Roy Williams (best recruiter in the game today).

You are right - they could easily coach men's teams. But that was not the question!

Calipari, Williams, "K" and John Thompson Jr. But you could pick a dozen, maybe more. What it really boils down to is who are the best recruiters (within NCAA guidelines, of course).

In the words of Abigail Adams, "don't forget the ladies." Tonight's Women's Final features, two coaches, Pat Summitt and Tara Vanderveer who can match up against anyone (only John Wooden has more Championships than Summitt), in our won backyard we have Sylvia Hatchell with as many rings as Ol' Roy and I think more Final Four appearances.

Right now, who are the best (active) college basketball coaches? Who makes your top 5?

Here are mine:

1. Coach K: Do we need an explanation?

2. Jim Calhoun: Consistent winning program.

3. Ben Howland: Three straight Final Fours.

4. Roy Williams: Consistent through the years at Kansas and now UNC

5. Billy Donovan: Back-to-Back titles with teams that weren't that dominant

Honorable mention:

Jim Boeheim, John Calipari, Tom Izzo, Bill Self, Bruce Pearl and Tom Crean

Now what do you think?
