Where's Fletch?

Ok there are some movies I can accept that aren't universally enjoyed like Clue or 9 to 5, both favorites of mine. But to leave Fletch out is an abomination. That movie is hilarious.

comedy classic

...Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was my top pick with Search for the Holy Grail. Fritz the Cat was up there also. Young Frankenstein should have been included.

I think Arsenic and Old Lace

I think Arsenic and Old Lace deseves to be listed. Also didn't know The Graduate and Frankenstein were comedies.

Not a perfect selection, but not bad.

Trying to boil down everyone's favorite comedies to just 64 selections is an obviously impossible task. A few of my favorites that didn't make the cut were "Murder by Death", "Fletch", and "Clue" (all three endings!).

But the bracket was acceptable in my opinion, since the way it was set up it was quick and easy to chuck off the chaff and get to the good stuff. It wasn't very hard to pick "Dr. Strangelove" over "Father of the Bride", or "Blazing Saddles" over "Wayne's World", but the truly agonizing decision came when it was time to pick the champion. It took a lot of contemplation for me to give "The Princess Bride" the edge over "M*A*S*H", and I'm still second-guessing. The rest of my top 4 was comprised of "Dr. Strangelove", and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

Seriously. No Young Frankenstein? You've got Tom Hanks in here twice with Big & Toy Storyl; Mike Myers, Ben Stiller and Bill Murray all got double entries. You left out "Hot Shots" and put in Scary Movie? You listed Hitch and Shakespeare in Love, Jerry Maquire (what?) but left out Hannah and Her Sisters, Say Anything and High Fidelity? I agree with the questions about where is an original Pink Panther and how about Tommy Boy?

I prefer A Night at the Opera, but I concede the greatness of Duck Soup. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World is comedy gold (I accidently voted for the Odd Couple), so my hat's off to you for that. Still, where are A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, the Birdcage, O Brother Where Art Thou (shame on you) the Money Pit, Christmas Vacation, Being There, The Party, Waking Ned Devine?

And while we're at it, if Scary Movie and Airplane get a nod, how about Murder By Death and the Cheap Detective?

Overall, a decent list, but I think you need to poll the readers next time for a better variety.

You know, ask the pros from Dover.

Movie Madness

My biggest beef is that you have the two funniest movies ever meeting in the 3rd round - Blazing Saddles and Monty Python should have faced off for the championship, and the Holy Grail wins by a nose.
Glaring omissions: A Shot in the Dark, Arsenic and Old Lace and Office Space. No matter how many times I've seen them, these movies still make me laugh out loud.

Too many good movies to makes these decisions--there is no way to compare these two wonderful films. How can one be better than the other?

Now this a classic! It's an early Cary Grant, and oh so funny! Much like Bringing Up Baby. Check it out!

Really? "Bringing up Baby" over "Arsenic and Old Lace"?

I also wondered about choosing "Groundhog Day" over "What About Bob?".

definition of "classic"

For the bracket, "classic" is pre-1970.

You're right - there's not much difference between '68 and '70. But we set that as a cut-off because we wanted to make sure we included classic movies without having the bracket overrun with them.

We want the bracket to be as fun as possible for as many people as possible. That means including movies that we think people have seen. If we filled the bracket with black-and-white films from the 40s and 50s, people would've REALLY complained.

Trust me.

definitions

Of course, there're many movies that should be here, and there are many here that shouldn't be. It's all opinion, right? But the categories are screwy. For example "Harold and Maude" might fit in "Wildcard"; you can't seriously consider it "Romantic", given the other picks in that category. "Bringing Up Baby" is definitely "Slapstick", and very few of the movies in that category are slapstick. And what is your "Classic" definition, or is it just an arbitrary cut-off date that defines that category? There's not much difference between 1968 (The Odd Couple) and 1970 (M*A*S*H) And if the cut-off is 1969, say, why the hell are there 48 pre-1969 movies in the other three categories and only the 16 pre-1969 "Classic" movies? There are so many more pre-1969 movies, and many of the post-1969 ones you list are just barely, if at all, funny.

Movie Madness: Down to the Sweet Sixteen is. How did the N&O do on the film bracket?

We seeded 64 film comedies for our 2008 Life, etc. bracket. Are you happy with the choices? Did we leave off your favorite movie? Let us know.

Without question, the choice that caused the most consternation among members of the selection committee was the omission of Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein." In an effort to bring as much diversity as possible to the bracket, we tried to limit big-name directors and stars to one movie.

In the end, Brooks' "Blazing Saddles" made the cut. What do you think? Should we have included "Young Frankenstein?"
