well.. Let's have this

well.. Let's have this discussion in 10 games. if the hurricanes are 8-2, I say good trade. IF they are anything under .500, then it just didnt work.

Because, of course, the only thing that makes a trade good is if the team that made the trade wins a bunch of games because of it. No, it couldn't actually be a long-term thing.

Please--I bet you called the Markov-for-Williams trade a bad one after Williams didn't score a hat trick in his first game, right?

Sorry, but this trade

Sorry, but this trade signifies the proverbial white flag for the Canes this year. These are two proven playoff performers that sold heart and soul for the Canes in their Cup run. This trade reeks of giving up for the year, and it's a shame. If you want to keep the stands full, it's not really a bright idea to trade two of the most popular players on the team. What's next, Rod for a player to be named later?

Canes, Canes, Canes.....

While i hated to see both cory and commie i truly think that this trade immediatly bostlers our blue line and our third line of forwards. Lets not forget about another young winger who was stuggling before he came to carolina for another expiring defenseman, Justin Williams. Im not saying that Patrick is going to come in and net 70 points next season but he is going to have every chance in the world to do so. As for Corvo, he was the 5th defender in Ottawa and I think he will be the 2nd or 3rd in Carolina. He has twice as many points as any other Carolina blue liner and he is going to be the only defensman on the ice during the power play. If Corvo racks up 20 more points the rest of the season and we make the playoffs this turns out to be a great trade. I find that hockey fans often fall in love with players and their personalities not necsarilly their skills. Sure Commie was Big Red and had a killer canes tattoo but for anybody to say that he is as good or better then Corvo is just wrong. As for Stillman, lets face it he was solid but his point production has really dropped off in the last three weeks, not to mention he is 34 years old. I think that Evaes will have a great future in his new red and black uniform and the same for Corvo. Great trade for the Canes now and the coming years.

Hoping this Works for Both Teams

I had a tough job to do last night. I had to tell my Novice son that his favourite player (Patrick Eaves) was traded from Ottawa. As an Ottawa family, we all cheer for the Sens. That being said, I admire the way the Hurricanes have built their team and applaud the team character and success in a non-traditional hockey market. Past and future accomplishments are well deserved.

You might think that on a team with superstars like Alfredsson, Heatley, Spezza, and others that Eaves would be an odd choice for a young fan, but I will speculate that 3 years from now, you will look back on this trade and realize that it was a win-win. As mentioned in another post, Eaves is a smart, quality forward that is hard to play against. I don't buy the injury prone argument - he just came back too early from the initial shoulder injury and wont make the same mistake twice. He may not light it up on the score sheet, but he is a great skater who has a strong will, positive attitude, and a two-way presence. Corvo will give some flash on the blue line (as well as spawn occasional cursing from fans and coaches alike) and will have an immediate impact on the Canes, but Eaves may end up as the gem of this deal. I am sad to see him go.

As for Murray, I can understand why the deal was done. This deal makes the team better today than it was yesterday. I hope it can push the Sens to the Cup this year. If so, Stillman and Commodore will be embraced by this city as the rest of the team has been embraced. For Carolina fans of these much-loved Canes, we will treat them well during their tenure in our fair city. I now have a son who will be cheering for the Canes from afar. Good luck to all.

I hate to see Commie and Stiller go. I can hope that Stillman wants to sign back in the off season. I would have thought that Commie could have been affordable because Hedi shouldn't get another large contract. The team knew that if they couldn't fix it themselves then the GM would pull the trigger. The onus for this is on them.

Farewell to a Couple of True Leaders

Call me naive, but does this mean that we are now "just another professional sports stop along the way?"

Commodore was a real spark for this hockey team. Stillman was just nine points short of an average of either a goal or and assist per game over the course of 55 games.

Maybe the fans will appreciate the trade. But what will happen to the "club personality" and "team profile" of the Carolina Hurricanes? Can we ever be like the great Bobby Orr Boston Bruin teams or the Jean Ratelle New York Ranger clubs of yesteryear?

Are there no more "intangibles" in pro hockey?

This is something akin to what would have happened if the '60s New York Yankees had traded Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris at mid-season.

Well, back to reality and give the new players a good welcome. But doesn't anybody else out there feel that you want to give proven veterans such as Mike Commodore and Cory Stillman at least a tip of the hat before they board their flight to their new franchise home?

Where have you gone, Esposito Brothers, Rocket Richard and Gordie Howe...?

Okay, okay, you don't have to tell me, folks. Hockey is different nowadays...

OTT/CAR Trade

A trade was imminent but I didn't expect these 2 players to be dealt. To me it doesn't look that great on paper, BUT Rutherford has consistently shown that he gets the job done as far as personnel goes so I am going to put my faith in the man.

Another thought...I think Commie is gone for good, but could Stillman just be a rental? He waived a no trade clause to go and having expressed his affinity for RDU, I wouldn't be surprised if he resigned with us for next season.

No matter what, something needed to happen, hope it works out.

Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves

I love this trade. I had said I thought we would deal Commodore since he is a UFA this summer. I am glad we got Corvo in retun and Eaves will help with the energy and perhaps some points if he can just stay healthy!
Corvo had wanted to be traded to an American team and I think he can flourish in a market like ours. Not to mention IF we make the playoffs, Corvo is a very good playoff player.

Finally a shakeup...

Rutherford has said many times in recent weeks that you have to give up alot to get something in return. This trade proves that statement. But it really is a smart trade by one of, if not THE, best GMs in the league. Stillman was not going to be back next year, period. To get a young prospect with some NHL games under his belt for a guy that wasn't in your plans is a great move.

The play of Tim Gleason, Bret Hedican (since his return), Glen Wesley and Nick Wallin (PLEASE STAY HEALTHY) sure makes it easier to part with Commodore, and Corvo should certainly help the power play and the pace of the game 5 on 5. And he has a great shot...Patrick Eaves is one of those guys that everybody hates to play against but loves to have on their team. He is like taking Larose's energy and Andrew Ladd's offensive ability and putting them into one little ball of hate. Now, if he can just stay healthy...

This trade should also be seen as a message to the rest of the team that (a) the front office is dedicated to bettering the team and (b) no one is immune from being traded-and not all trades send you to a contender like the Sens! This team has the skill to go deep in the playoffs-they just need to focus and execute.

I am shocked to see that Stillman's been traded, but let's face it, Rutherford had to do something. We needed a puck moving defenseman like Corvo, so that much makes sense. I can only wonder if Rutherford was planning on letting these guys go in the offseason anyway. Eaves sounds a lot like Ladd to me: physical player with scoring potential that gets hurt alot. It's only worth the gamble if Stillman was totally out of their future plans.

Eaves/Corvo Trade

Like most fans, I too will miss Commie and Stiller but remember them fondly for all the memories they helped create. This move by Jim Rutherford means that the management has the will to compete and gives me a glimmer of hope for a playoff spot. Let's hope Mr. Rutherford's savy pays off again as it did with the Weight and Recchi trades. Go 'Canes!!!

Ottawa/Carolina trade

I think this benefits both teams. Canes get younger and quicker and Corvo has a bomb from the point the Canes were desperately needing. Losing Stillman and his scoring ability could prove costly since Canes are struggling to find the net. But he's on the latter part of his career. Both he and Commodore are sleds. I can out skate them. Commodore was good for size and being physical but he got schooled by quicker forwards and takes dumb penalties. Even trade.

Well put it this way 80% of the Hockey News readers think the Senators got a steal. The Hurricanes will not improve grately but the Senators, who are already a Stanley Cup team have improved grately.

The Carolina Hurricanes traded two guys that were a part of the 2006 Stanley Cup championship team Monday. Cory Stillman and Mike Commodore will go to Ottawa for Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves. Was this a good move or did the Canes make a huge mistake?
