Arlo and Janis

Keep this cartoon. I missed it when I moved here from Milwaukee eight years ago ....

Frank and Earnest is a great strip ...

The Grizwells is great, too ...

Kit 'n' Carlyle ... another great series ...

Brewster Rocket is fun - often topical without being too controversial ...

Start running old copies of "The Far Side" and "Calvin and Hobbes." It has been years since anything has touched a nerve like these comics ...

As for Mallard Fillmore - I love a comic that can say so much in one panel ...

Home and Away is Awesome!!!!!!!!!

I've been reading Home and Away for the last few weeks and I'm really enjoying it. It's clever, funny and very current with what is going on these days for families, couples, kids, the electronic age, etc.

I hope you're going to consider making Home and Away a permanent fixture in the N&O. It's much funnier than some of the comic strips that have been running for years.

It's a keeper!!! Hope you agree.

Home-Other-Ollie

Home and Away is better than most that have been tried this year. Not very funny but OK.

The Other Coast hits it now and then. So, again, better than most that have been tried.

Ollie and Quentin...not much to this strip. Very slight humor to it but just can't see how there's enough premis to sustain it.

In any event, thanks for keeping at it.

Ollie and Quentin

The name Quentin should be associated with a character of stature, dignity and undoubted grand abilities--perhaps a rescuer of the unfortunate.
The lugworm is an inferior thing, a marine polychaete annelid with bristles, often used for bait!
I am dismayed and resentful. I can't wait for this strip to be cast away!

If it is possible to add three cartoons with less drawing ability than Sylvia, & lacking any redeeming humour whatsoever, these three qualify (:<(((((((((.

Ugh(1)! Ugh(2)! & Ugh(3)!

Kudos to the N&O!

I LOVE the new comic page! The two-page format is totally
perfect! Twice the fun! I want to thank you guys for bringing back 'Cathy' and 'Drabble'. I was so sad when they were gone, but - they're back!! Whoo Hoo! Can I bake you
guys a cake or wash all your cars or something?
The other comics I love and couldn't do without are:
For Better or for Worse
Zits
Luann
Funky Winkerbean
Dilbert
Bizarro
Sally Forth
Baby Blues
Garfield
Get Fuzzy.
I am also a big fan of three new comics you've introduced:
'Pickles'(reminds me of MY grandparents!) 'Pearls before Swine', and 'Sherman's Lagoon' (that crab is CUTE - if all that cartoonist did was draw a picture of that crab I would be totally entertained!):)
Concerning the guest comics you have currently running, I'd like to speak up for 'Scary Gary'. I really think this comic is worth putting in the paper permanently. Once again, if THIS cartoonist were only to draw that little monster with the fangs I would be happy.
The only criticisms I have are that I don't like 'The Knight Life', 'Pooch Cafe' - and while I'm at it, 'Sylvia',
and 'Mutts' are both pretty rotten. Maybe you could replace one of them with a certain guest comic (SCARRY GARRRRY) and keep on with the refreshing little round of new guest comics? ;)
I hate 'Candorville' with a passion. I wish it would go away. It is very offensive. :P
Anyway, just some suggestions along with my praise for the
great new comics and double pages. Keep up the great work!
:)

Please not Spider Man!!!

I think Spider Man is the worst comic strip I have ever read.

I do like The Brilliant Modn of Edison Lee.

Mallard Fillmore needs to be on the editoral page.

3 New in late May

Deflocked - I may develop a taste for this in time. So far, not too funny but has potential.

Edison Lee - takes on good topics but just not humorous. I need humor in comics.

Spider Man - OK in the movies due to special effects. If the N&O can't find a way to provide special effects on the comics page, then Spider Man is long long long past its prime. Long.

In any event dear N&O thank you very much for keeping at it.

Trial Strips

Deflocked - verdicit is out. I think I might like it.
Spider Man - you have to be kidding! Lose it
Edison Lee - not funny

Have you thought of trying one I see in other papers called Pooch Cafe? I like it. Also, a one panel called Off the Mark.

I liked the 1 panel comics you had on trial a month of so back. Retail - glad it's gone.

By the way - I love Millard Filmore! Comedy with a bite!

One of my earliest memories is of my Grandfather, sitting me on his lap and teaching me to read the comics. You know
set up in panel one, clinch in panel two, joke in panel three. I to this day love the comics. I am 66!

I’m so glad you asked!

I’m so glad you asked! (Page 1-E, Wed, May 28). I’ve been extremely unhappy with the “funnies” for many years now. I realize a lot of those authors have passed on and no one is writing the strips for them, but this new crop of strips is, in my humble opinion, AWFUL!

I am 54 years old, born in 1954, which makes me a “baby boomer”. I grew up reading the Comix, including “Nancy”, “Blondie”, “Marmaduke”, “Peanuts”, even “Mary Worth”, “Little Orphan Annie” and “Doctor Kildare”. In those days I learned from them, like how to behave, how to talk to people of different genders and age groups, people of different professions, races, etc. These days I really like the serials, especially “For Better or for Worse”.

The commix I especially hate today are:
*Cathy (I was sooo glad when it discontinued several years ago. Why did it come back?
Did she need the money or something? It is just insulting to women. That isn’t how most of us are!)
*Rose is Rose (hard to read)
*Rhymes with Orange
*Pearls Before Swine (only because the Alligators are too tedious to read)
*Funky Winkerbean, now that they’ve killed off Lisa – She and Les were the only reason I read the strip in the first place, everyone else bored me. Why did they kill Lisa off?)
*Watch Your Head
*Mallard Fillmore (I never liked political cartoons)
*Candorville
*Sylvia (impossible for these 54 y/o eyes to read, I don’t want to have to get out my
reading glasses just to read this one particular comic strip)
*Deflocked (too much like “Get Fuzzy”
*Get Fuzzy
*Spider Man (never liked the comic books in the 50s, either – too slow with too many
facial grimaces for my taste, like Animae – gross!)
*F Minus
*Non Sequitor
*Bizarro
*Marmaduke (it is WAAAY too childish now – why???)
*Rhymes with Orange

The ones that BORE me are:
*Rose is Rose
*Tundra
*Lio (it’s funny once in awhile)
*Sherman’s Lagoon

The ones I love are:
*Wizard of Id
*For Better or For Worse
*Luann
*Zits
*Beetle Baily
*BC
*Hagar the Horrible
*Sally Forth
*CURTIS!!!! (My FAVE!)
*Shoe
*Peanuts
*Garfield
*Frazz
*Mother Goose and Grimm
*Pickles
*Dilbert

The rest are OK, but not the greatest, but far better than the ones I HATE. I’ll be very curious to read other readers’ input on my humble opinion of these strips. Thank you!

Usually I can find some

Usually I can find some redeeming quality to at least one of the comics you've tried out. Not so this time. Spiderman is little more than Mary Worth. Edison Lee and Deflocked are just re-workings of strips that are already in place (and not drawn as well). Of the recently added ones, Mallard Fillmore often would be more appropriate on the editorial page, F-minus is rarely funny and Watch your head is just whiney. Frazz is consistantly good for a laugh in the morning, as is Pearls Before Swine. I didn't get Lio when it first ran, but appeals to me when my alter ego breaks out (ala Rose is Rose).
So, keep trying!

single panel

Ladare and I are on the same page: can't remember the names of the two single panel strips but those two were definitely far better than any other competitors to date. I kept meaning to write, and then kept meaning to tear out two panels before I threw out the recycling so I would remember the names, but of course I did neither. Damn. But my enthusiasm is no less for my lack of memory!
