The AG has it right. Federal law prohibits aiding and abetting illegal aliens.

It is absolutely ridiculous

It is absolutely ridiculous to grant any further means for illegal aliens to benefit from their illegal status. They need to return home, seek education in their nation, or do as many American citizens do every year and apply to universities and colleges outside of the United States.

Our Founding Father's Outlook on Immigration

Yes, that's true, but even our founding fathers would have found a better way to solve the issue. You can't satisfy everyone, but at least we can be fair and compassionate. I'm not seeing that attitude in most of these blogs.

We shouldn't even have to give an illegal alien an education. They should be deported right along with their parents.

International Tuition Rate. Don't you get it!

Sure it will Sally. Those 27 illegal aliens are going to strengthen the tax base, while the family can't earn enough money to send them to state funded college and they are whinning and crying about how expensive it is to go to college!

The illegal aliens attending college will benefit the college and tax base when they start paying international tuition rates. Just like the other international students that have permission to be her and have student visas.

You are not going to ever see another Amnesty because the manjority of Americans are against it. Give up your pipe dream. The illegals are not going to stay and if they try, they will be very uncomfortable because Americans are taking back America, from foreign nationals one law, one city, and one state at time.

I believe that illegal immigrants should NOT be taking up spots at our college. I would advise them to go back to their home country to work for change and rights.

Enough is enough

Illegal aliens should not

Illegal aliens should not receive any benefits at the taxpayers' expense. It is utterly deplorable that elected officials have no regard for either the law or for their constituents and fellow citizens. Illegal is illegal and these individuals should return to their own nations and seek education there. They should self deport. Americans are not changing their minds and want the illegal aliens to leave.

I SAY EDUCATION FOR ALL

Providing access to higher education for undocumented students will actually strengthen our future tax base. It would give an opportunity to young people who have grown up in North Carolina, and been educated in NC public schools to obtain a higher education while also allowing our state to have access to the long-term economic benefits that these students can provide as a highly educated and bilingual workforce. This is about investing in the future of NC and the people who live, work and raise families here. Immigrant families are pulling more than their own weight when it comes to the taxes they pay, the contribution they are making to our growing economy, and what they bring to a diverse state like North Carolina. This is not about special rights; this is about not making the self-defeating mistake of cutting off the achievement and ability to succeed of our neighbors.

In addition, I'd like to point out that in-state tuition and federal immigration issues are separate issues from open enrollment admission. Even when given the opportunity for admission, undocumented students must still pay out-of-state tuition, which is over $2,000 more than the actual cost of
educating the students. So technically, the community college system is making a profit from them.

Finally, I'd like to say that this is yet another reminder of the need for federal comprehensive immigration reform, so that undocumented families that live, work and contribute to our society can receive legal documentation.

The new Policy is Good

WHY ADMITTING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO COMMUNITY COLLEGES IS BAD PUBLIC POLICY

According to estimates, the previous policy of allowing illegal aliens to attend community colleges would cost North Carolina taxpayers between $6 million and $8 million. If the program expands (more illegal alien students than anticipated), costs will increase.

The previous policy – in violation of the federal Immigration and Nationality Act – encouraged and induced illegal immigration by providing illegal immigrants with a taxpayer-subsidized education. By preparing illegal immigrants to enter North Carolina’s workforce, this new policy also ignores the fact that under the Immigration and Nationality Act it is illegal to employ an illegal alien.

The directive issued by Easly and carried out by Martin Lancaster asks taxpayers to subsidize the education of undocumented aliens who are not in the country legally and cannot legally work in North Carolina or in the United States.

The previous plan charged illegal immigrants with out-of-state tuition. On average, out-of-state tuition covers only 50 percent to 70 percent of the total costs of education.

Alternative figures released by the community college system regarding the costs to educate an out-of-state student do not include capital costs. According to the North Carolina Community College System Fact Book: http://www.ncccs.cc.nc.us/Publications/docs/Publications/fb2007.pdf , tuition funds comprise only 12.5 percent of total community college operating expenses. State and local funds – i.e., state and local taxpayers – comprise 82 percent of all funding for the community college system.

In 2005, legislation to grant illegal immigrants in-state-tuition was considered by the North Carolina General Assembly. According to Civitas’ April 2007 DecisionMaker Poll ( http://old.jwpcivitasinstitute.org/keylinks/Polls/2007-April-Poll.pdf ),
70 percent of voters oppose giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition.

In 2001, Texas granted in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. In 2005, Texas reported a 900 percent increase in enrollment of illegal immigrants in state higher education institutions and community colleges.

IAs in higher education

Don't beleive for one minute Bevery Perdue's recently stated opposition to illegal immigrants in state supported higher education institutes. Ask yourselves where has she been on this issue for the last three and one-half years. We have a little saying in Spanish, "Dime con quien andas, y te dire quien eres."--"Tell me who you run around with and I'll tell you who you are." Well, Bev Perdue co-hosts feminist think tank conferences with ex-Mexican First Lady Marta de Fox. I think it would therefore be safe to discount as gross prevarications and insincere election year pandering any recent denouncements on Ms. Perdue's part regarding the policy of admitting ilegal aliens to NC Community Colleges and Universities. McCrory probably wouldn't much better on this either after an election win, truth be known. La Raza organized a massive unauthorized (public assemblies per Charlotte ordinances require permits so the necessary public safety, traffic, parking, and sanitation arrangements can be made and the organizers of demonstrations are required to pay expenses related to this) May Day "immigrant rights/immigration reform" demonstration right outside his Charlotte Mayor's office window and HE DID NOT LIFT A FINGER TO IMPOSE THE RULE OF LAW.

Our Founding Father’s Outlook on Immigration

Our founding fathers were generally wary of immigration, and many of them were concerned about the consequences for the U.S. if levels were not controlled and limited.

Benjamin Franklin was concerned about mass influx of immigrants from middle European countries and that they showed little desire to adopt our language and customs. He felt that immigrants of sufficient number and concentration would radically change the cultural landscape in ways that the native population might not want.

Thomas Jefferson was concerned with immigrants from countries whose heads of state were monarchs and dictators. He felt that a large influx of immigrants from places without any experience with our kind of government and society could only introduce confusion and discord. Jefferson felt that it was better to wait patiently for the natural increase of the American population rather than achieve such increase by mass immigration and that the country would, as a result, be more peaceable and more durable.

Alexander Hamilton felt that any generous immigration policy has its limits if the welfare of the country is to be protected. He felt the safety of a republic depended “essentially on the energy of a common national sentiment; on a uniformity of principles and habits; on the exemption of the citizens from foreign bias, and prejudice; and on that love of country which will almost invariably found to be closely connected with birth, education, and family.” For Hamilton, immigration policy was a matter of prudence and good sense, not a moral imperative.

George Washington contended that the United States had no real reason to encourage immigration. He expressed a concerned observation that immigrants “retain the language, habits and principles (good or bad) that they bring with them.”

Rufus King, Constitutional Convention delegate from Massachusetts, was concerned about the character of the immigrants whom America might attract. He wrote in a 1798 letter, “it was the practice of the Emigrants from Scotland to bring with them Certificates from the religious Societies to which they belonged, of their honesty, sobriety, and generally of their good Character! Why should we not require some such Documents from all Emigrants, and it would be well to add to the Testimonial that the person to whom it was granted was not expelled from his Country and had not been convicted of any crime.” King wondered, “If from the emigrations of past time we have suffered inconvenience and our true national character has been disfigured, what are we to expect from the Emigrants of the present Day?”

John Jay, who would become the first chief justice of the United States, celebrated the fact that for all its “diversity”, the United States consisted essentially of people whose religious and cultural traits were broadly similar and compatible, rather than widely divergent and a potential threat to social comity.

At the Constitutional Convention, New York’s Gouverneur Morris noted that the privileges that immigrants enjoyed in the U.S. were considerably greater than in the rest of the world, but he concluded by stating that “every Society from a great Nation down to a Club has the right of declaring the conditions on which new members should be admitted.”

In summary, our founding fathers and leaders of the government from its earliest days fully supported our new republic’s right to control immigration and determine exclusionary criteria for citizenship. They would have opposed the essentially unrestrictive mass immigration numbers that we are seeing today and would have abhorred the million plus unvetted illegal immigrants coming in each year.
