HOMESICK HOLIDAYS

I'm from upstate New York and what I miss most is family and friends.when I read the article in the news paper it was exactly what I was feeling.Thanksgiving was depressing . I'm use to being with alot of family even though my husband and parents have moved to N.C. with me.I'm not looking forward to x mas I dont even want to do x mas.We have been down here for about a year and a half. The first year we had some family come down. It seems now no one wants to come down. Because of our jobs were unable to visit family during holidays. I feel lonely.

When I was little x mas eve we would go to my fathers parents house and all his family would be there. my fathers uncle would dress up as santa claus, it was really fun. x mas day we would go to my mothers parents house with most of her family there. My grandmothers cooking was so good.We usually saw lots of snow by then it was pretty. When I grew up we still saw alot of family. Now in n.c. it is sad during this time of the year.Did I mention I feel lonely, yeah I think I did. It's comforting to know someone else feels the same way, referring to the article.

oh, one more thing I miss, good bread. N.C. does not have alot of Italian bread or rye bread. where I'm from in New York there were alot of bakerys.

           Thanks for listening
Homesick in N.C.

When I opened my newest edition of "Cooking Light" and turned to an artilce on a Santa Fe Christmas, I was instantly overcome with an incredible pang of homesickness for the place I called home for eleven years - New Mexico. And I am not a native to that land, but the traditions at Christmas are so incredibly beautiful and delicious that I soon became a convert!

Each Christmas Eve it became a tradition to head for Old Town in Albuquerque which was decked out with thousands of luminarias aglow and people milling around in a festive mood. We would eat tradtional foods such as posole, tamales and enchiladas, and then we would end the evening, before midnight Christmas Eve services, by driving around some of the many neighborhoods that competed in creating the most luminous displays of the lovely luminarias around the houses and on the roofs - truly a magical experience. And while the lighting of luminarias has become more widespread, nothing can compare with the whole package of a New Mexican Christmas Eve.

I was born in Emmett, Idaho and raised thirty miles away in Boise. What I miss the most is the down home feeling you get when all your family and friends are within thirty miles and you can see them whenever you want. I also miss the snow and snow fights at grandma and grandpa's house. I mostly miss being a kid and being about to roll around in the snow making snow angels and getting upset by the hand print in the middle of my "perfect" snow angel. But, thanks to GOD, He has allowed me to live another year cancer free.

The holiday season can be wonderful, but it can be tough, too.

Especially if you’re one of more than 25,000 transplants new to the Triangle each year.

Maybe you miss the comforts and the traditions of the hometown you left behind.
Have all you Northerners and Midwesterners noticed that something is missing?
Could that be ... snow?

What about the Californians and the Arizonans and Texans? Having trouble finding tamales for your holiday meal?

And the Pacific Northwesterners ... how do our Christmas trees here stack up?
Or maybe you’re from someplace overseas where they do something completely different for the holidays — or from not far away but remember how they celebrated differently a long time ago.

We’re looking for stories about what people miss most during the holidays.
Could be a food (lobster, anyone?), an activity (bonfires, ice skating?) or even people. Maybe you were REALLY looking forward to roasting chestnuts with Uncle Chester.

Post your comments here -- we will be choosing some of the best ones to print in the News & Observer.
