Peace Pole in Moore Square

At various meetings of Lutheran Peace Fellowship we have discussed the idea of "sponsoring" a Peace Pole and/or a Peace Garden in one of the public parks of Raleigh. We found out that nearly all the parks have some established plan governing whether concepts like this are allowed. We did identify one park that seemed to be available in the sense of not having a plan that would preclude this. Then I believe we decided we didn't have the resources to maintain the proposed garden.

More recently someone became aware that there is already a Peace Pole in Moore Square. We have no idea who maintains it. I made a point of finding it today while I was attending the Raleigh CROP WALK. I took photos of it for my offline collection.

Thank you! SFA is not that far from where I live, so I went to see it this afternoon. I was impressed by how nicely this peace pole is set up.

There is one at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Leesville Road as well.

This essay started out as a longer comment about the Peace Pole at the State Fair, but now I think that's too confining a place to put it.

I think my first introduction the idea of a Peace Pole came when my younger daughter found it suggested as a project in her Girl Scout handbook in 1993 or 1994 and became interested in pursuing it. She proposed that our church install and dedicate one. I came to learn that members of the social ministry committee had been considering this for some time (a few years, perhaps) but had never carried it fully through. This inquiry pushed them to complete the action, and my daughter selected the 4 languages that are on Grace Lutheran's Peace Pole
