Speaking of macro photography...

jpbell11

Does anyone use a macro ring flash for macro photography?  I have been thinking about getting one and am not really sure what I should be looking for.  I have a Nikon D-70.  Anyone have any suggestions on either a good model, or certain aspects that I should make sure that a flash has before I buy one?  Thanks!  Julie

macro ring flash

jpbell,

N&O photo lab technician, Paul Magann, has this advice:

Ring flashes work fine on macro subjects, but it is known for
shadow-less light. This quality might be a good or bad thing depending
on what your subject matter is. Before purchasing this type flash you
should demo it at a camera store if at all possible.

I've shot a fair amount of macro photography and have never used a flash ring. I usually shoot in daylight when it's an outdoor subject or just set up one or two lights if it's indoors.

DOF and focal length

I had been under the misaken impression that focal length was strongly related to depth of field (such that longer lenses had shorter focal lengths). According to the site above, the effect is slight. I had been thinking of obtaining a shorter macro lens to get a longer DOF, but now I'll save my money for a nice wide angle.
