How to post photos

I am new here.  I started trying to post images starting Friday the 10th and have not been sucessful.

I don't see any error messages, they just don't apear on the site.  Is there some blank that I may be missing?  I am posting under "vgphotog".

Any ideas

NEVER hit the preview button

NEVER hit the preview button before posting! You can always go back and edit later if you find a mistake (then have to wait again for the approval process). I had this problem for the longest time and for some reason it kills the post. Also if the file name is not something unique it could be colliding with another photo already posted under the same file name. A way to remedy this is to add your username into the file name somewhere to prevent duplicate file names from colliding onsite here. Hope this helps.

Clarification

Preview does work - I use it all the time.  The issue is: when you are viewing your previewed image and you decide you like it, you cannot just press the submit button, you have to start over.  So, it's a two step process (if you want to preview first):

1. (optional preview) go to: I want to > Share a Photo and enter in just the title and image location > preview.

2. To upload, go back to: I want to > Share a Photo and enter in all the relevant details > Submit.  If this is successful, you'll be taken back to the photo page and there will be a single line comment confirmation that includes your new "points total" below the banner.

I'm hoping this gets fixed soon!

The actions under the "I want to" button in the upper right are one of the "challenging" aspects of the UI.

Preview is not working as intended

I was also unable to post to the gallery for a couple of weeks  while insisting on directly going from preview to posting. The process used to work fine in the old system. I have been using preview more for checking the title, tags, and description than the picture itself. I trust the latter will be the one I selected! So as it stands, preview is useless to me and I will try to double check my words before I do a direct posting.

Rather than starting another thread, I can also say that some pictures successfullly posted on August 13, 2007, still do not show on the public gallery. However they show in the gallery after I login. This affects 6 pictures, 2 of mine and 4 by others... That may be another form of preview! Has anybody else noticed this problem before?

I noticed a similar problem...

I noticed a similar problem for one photo I uploaded a while back. It never showed up in the public gallery at all whether I was logged in or not but would show up in my personal gallery only after I logged in. After that I went back and posted a wisecrack comment to my own photo and tracked it and noticed that only a limited few could see it, but not everyone. Anyway it was a photo of a random bull with a ring in its nose, and it's still lost deep within Middle Earth somewhere...

Will check posting after minor editing

I just made minor changes to the description (body) of the 2 photos that did not post to the public gallery (but where visible to me after login), then hit post without preview. They disappeared all right from my logged-in view. I'll see what happens to them in a day or two... In case they are not back publicly again, one is Sunset over Dorton Arena (on the 4th of July), the other is Pink Waterlily (at JC Raulston arboretum). They must have been viewed by logged-in users because the hit count of each went up since they "half-posted" on August 13.

Don't you just love the challeges to conquer here?

At first it was frustrating when I arrived, and I almost left...
Then one night I just randomly tried to post something without even previewing it.

WhaLaa! It was like Oh! Now I get it :o)

Since I love these kinds of challenges, that's why I stuck around. And since I was already well armed with both 35mm and multimegapixel ammunition, I figured I's fire off a few rounds of shots. And I'm still enjoying putting all these random puzzle pieces of the master blueprint together, one piece or sometimes more than one piec at a time. After a while you can begin to be able to interpolated what the missing pieces are and then go hunting from there.

It might be interesting to see if I could save a copy of one of my preview images and then sharpen it up, then upload it under another unique file name to get it reposted. Since the orginal image size would be exactly the same as the preview size no resizing would be required, and even if it went through the resizing software, it would still come up virtually unchanged. I think this challenge just might could be quite rewarding.

Oh, and another idea, kind of an extention on the idea of embedding photos within the texts of comments to create a whole story around one main picture. Could we use a slide show option around here? Can that option be found somewhere amongst the blueprint pieces remaining yet to be put together? Darm, I wish the HTML functions would work for me here as I cannot even access them... or haven't discovered just 'how' yet!!!

But in the meantime, since I've got this photo of a random bull still lost deep within Middle Earth inside my user photo gallery only visible to me and a very few select others after I have logged in, I might just save a copy of the preview image and sharpen it up a bit and put my little theory to the test at hand. Ah, these challenges are sure hitting my sweet spot! :o)

Pictures reappeared after editing

Success! The two pictures I could only see after being logged in, which I then edited a bit, are now showing in the public gallery at their old position, that is following Crystal's Tatoo already 5 pages behind the latest picture as of today. The other four pictures in the same case as mine (bunny, vacancy, tomato anyone, squash, by dbhorne and roebuckp) are still visible only after login...

not just a picture problem!

The "preview" button is also problematic when simply trying to start new forum topics.  I had trouble starting topics for the longest time until a generous and helpful photographer advised me to skip Preview and go directly to Submit.  This process works.

Note:  the only time Preview works, as far as I know, is when posting a reply such as this one.

I must say I am disappointed that the site itself is not helping solve this problem and that word of the solution is only being spread from user to user.

Thank You

I skipped the preview screen and I believe the post was sucessful.  Thank you to those posted suggestions.

Mofre Information Please

There four entries avaiable under gatagories.  What is the significance of each.

Topic:

I see that images may be selected by location, topic or special.  Does this have meaning to anyone other than the viewer?  Is it used by the site or the N&O?

Location:

Is this the location of the Photographer, the location where the picture was taken or the location that might be most interested in the image?

Other Tags:

I don't have a clue what could go here.  Any ideas?

Special Galeries:

This must be the classification that is being used when images are selected by "special"?

Body:

There is some information in the FAQ area about information that would be entered here.  Like camera used, who the photographer is and other information.  Maybe some suggestions and their importance would be good.

If this information is some where else on the site then let me know where it is.

Now that I have written this it seems rather trivial, but I think if we can create  some elaboration on the image documenting process it will be usefull information.
