My children have been in year round schools for 9 years.
We have loved it for many reasons and I truly think that Wake county never did a good PR job of selling the concept to families.
People have all these misconceptions about siblings being on different schedules or how child care is impossible to get arranged. My kids go to the fabulous YMCA tracking out programs and for folks who can't afford it there are scholarships. They don't get bored with a 10 week summer and they can do projects during their breaks that allow them to be more freed up during the actual school semester. We have taken some great vacations, and now that my daughters are in competitive sports that invloved travel, we don't worry about weekends spent not studying during track out periods.
Don't knock it til you've tried it. You'd be surprized how those short breaks really rejuvenate everyone.
