It's true these guys had excellent legal counsel and probably spent millions. However, assuming there would have been a truly impartial jury in Durham, I think a trial would have been embarrasing to Mr. Nifong even if the players were represented by a public defender.  What did he have?  A complaining "victim" who has given many different versions of what happened. The other dancer contradicted her story. The cell phone, ATM, dorm key records all contradicted her and there was no DNA evidence.  I think Nifong didn't want the case to go to trial because he had no idea how to prosecute it!!
