Kay Yow's return

http://www.newsobserver.com/122/story/534988.html

This is a story of courage and it doesn't recognize rivalry. I sat next to Mrs Yow at a dinner one night and I can tell you that she is one class act. We need more Kay Yow's in this world, I hope and pray that one day she beats this once and for all.

Kay Yow will prove you wrong

Kay Yow will prove you wrong yet, Ken.  You heartless equine doomsayer.

I think of all the subjects

I think of all the subjects that you foolish trolls can keep your game above board on is the health issue of Kay Yow.  I think all of you trolls who keep mischaracterizing my words just shame yourselves beyond all words.

And I'm done commenting on your classless efforts.

On the other hand, I am estatic to see Coach Yow back doing the job she loves doing and I hope she makes a full recovery and never has to suffer another relapse of cancer.

Welcome back Kay!

Beating breast cancer 3X is almost unheard of.  If Kay has done that, it is truly astounding.

Welcome back Kay!  We missed you!

Yow story on WRAL last night

They ran a piece on the WRAL 11pm news about Yow...  It sounds like her cancer is incurable, but her treatments should extend her life significantly and ensure that she can do what she loves doing.

It will be remarkable to see her return courtside...

That's sad.  But it

That's sad.  But it certainly speaks to the core of her character that she's going to continue coaching and bravely get the most from the life she has remaining.  Sounds precisely in the courageous path that James Valvano walked!

I truly don't know if anyone

I truly don't know if anyone really really "beats" breast cancer, rather they "beat it into submission" from time to time.

In any event, glad to have Kay back for as long as she wants.

Matt, It is possible to

Matt,

It is possible to have a full recovery from cancer.  As treatments become more effective, those odds are increasing.  Unfortunately for Yow, she has suffered three relapses of the cancer after previous remissions.

There are four basketball coaches at NC State who have established themselves as living legends -- Everett Case, Norm Sloan, Jim Valvano, and Kay Yow.  It is really tragic that three of these coaches had to battle cancer.

Case coached his team to a conference championship and was carried off the court.  He died shortly after and asked to be buried so that the team bus would be visible from the grave site as it drove to play Duke and UNC.

Valvano's courageous battle received rightful public attention and his foundation is one of the most effective at funding research to find cures and better treatments.

Yow's cancer is in a remission that according to her recent interview on WRAL is not expected to become a complete remission.  Rather, I gather the doctors are hoping to keep the cancer cells under sufficient remission so that she can enjoy a productive life as a coach.

It seems she's going to be in a medical condition where the cancer can increase in intensity at any time.  I find it heartbreaking that a lady of this much class is going to suffer like this.

I am thrilled to see back on the sidelines coaching as she most wants to do.  But despite her bravery and resolve, there is also a real sadness to it all.
