Jeff Davidson named Offensive Coordinator

Cleveland assistant head coach/offensive line coach Jeff Davidson, who coached on three Super Bowl championship teams with New England, has been named Carolina's offensive coordinator. The team also announced that Dave Magazu, who has served as the Panthers tight ends coach since 2003, has been named offensive line coach.

070124_coach_insideDavidson, 39, spent eight seasons with the Patriots before joining the Browns in 2005 as offensive line coach. He immediately molded a unit that paved the way for Reuben Droughns to rush for 1,232 yards, ending a 20-year drought that had not seen a Cleveland running back gain 1,000 yards since 1985. He was promoted to assistant head coach/offensive line coach in 2006 and served as the team's offensive coordinator for the final 10 games following the departure of Maurice Carthon six games into the season.

"Jeff has worked under some outstanding coaches, has a background with productive offenses and has been part of three Super Bowl victories with the Patriots," said Panthers head coach John Fox. "He is a highly regarded young coach who has experienced every phase of the NFL as a player and coach, and we look forward to having him on our staff."

Davidson said, "I am excited about this great opportunity. It is an outstanding staff, and I look forward to the challenge that lies ahead."

A former All-Big Ten choice and four-year letterman as an offensive lineman at Ohio State, Davidson was selected in the fifth round of the 1990 NFL Draft by Denver. After a four-year playing career with Denver and New Orleans, he contributed as an offensive assistant in 1995 and 1996 for the Saints. Davidson went to New England as tight ends coach in 1997 and coached the next seven seasons as both the assistant offensive line and tight ends coach for the Patriots.

Magazu spent four years as offensive line coach at Boston College prior to coming to Carolina as tight ends coach. While with the Eagles, he developed several pro prospects, including Dan Koppen, New England's starting center, and Chris Snee, the New York Giants second-round draft choice in 2004.

During his tenure at Boston College, the Eagles annually ranked among the most productive rushing teams in the nation while allowing just six sacks in 2000 and 15 in 2001. Four of his linemen were named All-Big East in 2001.

"Dave knows our players and has adjusted to the pro game while doing an excellent job as tight ends coach."
