1898 Cotton Compress from Charlotte, North Carolina
This compress reduces a bale of cotton to approximately eight inches to allow more bales of cotton to be transported via a railroad car.
It is estimated that with 130 lbs of steam the compress would put 4.5 million lbs. of pressure on a bale of cotton.

Wow! I didn't know anything like this had ever been put into service. I think that compression rivals modern compactors used on radioactive waste drums.
Does cotton get compacted today before shipment?
I presume this is permanently installed at the Farmpark and that the "roof" is just to help protect it from the elements, true?
