Does the Second Amendment grant Americans an indivdual right to bear arms or did the founding fathers only intend to empower state militias?

i completely agree our fathers did what they thought was the best. Here's a question for all you anti-gun people,,, what's next? knives, automobiles, rocks, hammers???? What would you do if confronted with a gun in your face by a criminal?? What will you do if confronted by extremists who want to turn this country muslim (check out photos' not published in the US of muslim protests in europe--they want to kill all who they consider infantiles (which is anyone not muslim btw),,, hello,, America,,, wake up!!!! do you really think the military or police can be everywhere at one time??? who do you think is going to protect you??? let's get back to basics, please,,, let everyone take responsibility for themselves--get a job,, earn your way,,, do the right thing in being an upstanding contributing individual--- you will feel way better about yourself.
Our forefather came from England where you had no right to bear arms and the only recongnized church was the Church of England. If you go back in history you will find that the right to bear arms was for every person, not governments or militias. These rights had been taken away by governments, which is what the Supreme Court does at times now. The Supreme Court has become a Soverein in its own right with too much power. The Constitution was written in simple language so there would be no misinterpretation.
What is the problem? You have the right to own a gun(s).
It is simple English!
The Bill of Rights does not give individuals the right to own a gun. In fact, no gun law has ever been challenged using the 2nd Amendment.
The 2nd Amendment gives the States rights to raise a militia and regulate firearms however they see fit. This Amendment explicitly gives each State the right to make regulative gun laws and the right to defend the State from the Federal Government.
It does not give Billy Bob the right to have an assault rifle. Sorry Billy Bob.
"The Bill of Rights does not give individuals the right to own a gun"
You're absolutely right; it protects their existing right from infringement.
"The 2nd Amendment gives the States rights to raise a militia and regulate firearms however they see fit."
Where do you see that?
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Not the right of the Militia, the right of the people. The same people covered by the 1st and 4th amendments.
Do you believe freedom of speech, religion are an individual right? If the answer is yes to that then the right to keep and bear arms are also an individual right. I am sorry you missed history class the day the constitution and bill of rights were studied. The fact of the matter is our founders put the bill of rights in the constitution to protecet the, now get this, RIGHTS OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL AMERICAN CITIZEN!!!!!!!!! The Revolutionary War was not started because of the boston tea party, but because british soldiers had been ordered by the king of england to disarm the citizens of this country and that is when the first shots were fired. I suggest you read the constitution and most especially the bill of rights and see every one of them Number one thru ten protect individual liberties and rights, and after that then tell me I don't have the right to protect my house and myself. Guns are not dumb, bur ignorance is bliss for you apparently.
wrong the 2nd amendment does give you the right to own an assault weapon ! when the bill of rights was drafted these were exsclusively to protect the people of this new born country ! An assault weapon in 1777 was a muzzleloader with a bayonet a .90 caliber. A few hours reading the Fedealist papers would be very educational. As far as armor piercing bullets they were outlawed many years ago. The National Guard had not evolved untill 1929..However if your theory is correct New York State removed the 2nd amendment from its constitution does that mean NY has no right to have a National Guard. This issue will be resolved in the next day or two we'll see...........
Your a DumbAss if someone was to rape your wife would you want to sit there and watch or do somthing about it a ball bat wouuldn t do much good but a good 44 would sure do the trick!
WOW u shur are ejakatid. But I will wipe that interesting interpretation off of my boots.
I'm sorry to burst your bubble but the same "the people" meantioned as being able to bear arms is the same "the people" that are mentioned in the phrase "We the people ...". Get it?
The militia, if you read any history books, was made up of the average "the people" who took up their arms from their mantles to fight for the same rights you do not hold dear. The Bill of Rights is not a State's Bill of Rights, but rather a Federal Bill of Rights. Try getting some reading glasses so you can focus a bit.
The first ten amendments are the "bill of rights" and each of them offers rights for an individual.
Have you ever read the entire bill of rights? Did they make numbers one and numbers three through ten for the individual but decide to thow one in there that was meant for the states? Every part of the bill of rights is/was meant to protect people from the state. All the states/fed rights issues come up later in the constitution.
Do you even know what 'explicit' means? People have been arguing over the wording for decades, so it's funny that you think arguing that the thing is 'explicit' will change anybody's mind.
And clearly, Gunsrdumb, you have something against people you have no experience with.
2nd amendment
The individual right to bear arms has been reinforced by the founding fathers in many other papers and documents
