Santa for Seniors

A local company is sponsoring a special holiday campaign designed to brighten the lives of hundreds of local seniors. Home Instead Senior Care has teamed up with local community organizations, retailers and volunteers to collect, wrap and donate gifts to needy or lonely seniors in Durham and Raleigh. This year’s campaign will focus on isolated seniors, some of whom are among this nation’s “elder orphans.” We see older adults who have no one during this festive season and that makes for a very sad and lonely time,” said David and Bonnie Thommarson, owners of the Home Instead Senior Care office in Durham. “Whether they are in a nursing home or in their own homes, where more are choosing to stay, it’s important to reach out to isolated older adults during this special time of the year.”

According to an article in the Geriatric Times (http://www.cmellc.com/geriatrictimes/), the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) has estimated that as many as 60 percent of nursing-home residents receive no regular visitors. That’s what makes Home Instead Senior Care’s Be a Santa to a Senior program such a boost for older adults during the holidays. The campaign has become the largest gift-giving project of its kind for older adults.

Here’s how the program, which runs from Nov. 19 through Dec. 12, works: Prior to the holiday season, the participating local non-profit organizations will identify needy, orphaned and isolated seniors in the community and provide those names to Home Instead Senior Care. Christmas trees, which will go up in Wal-Mart at 5450 New Hope Commons, Upchurch Drugs at 5108 N. Roxboro Street and Walgreens at 6405 Fayetteville Road in Durham, and Kerr Drug at 8385 Creedmoor Road and Wal-Mart at 1725 New Hope Church Road in Raleigh on November 19 will feature ornaments with the first names only of the needy seniors and their respective gift requests.

Holiday shoppers can pick up an ornament card, buy items on the list and return them unwrapped to the store, along with the senior ornament card attached. Home Instead Senior Care then enlists the volunteer help of its staff, senior-care business associates, non-profit workers and others to collect, wrap and distribute the gifts to these seniors.

In 2006, 196,500 lonely, needy seniors across North America received 312,500 gifts through this program. Moreover, 21,000 volunteers supported Santa during last year’s holiday season, with 1,500 locations across North America hosting a tree.

Be a Santa to a Senior is an annual holiday tradition that is changing the way many view the needs of seniors during the holidays,” Thommarson said. “We hope that the community will support our efforts as a way of giving back to the seniors in our area who have given us so much.” Businesses are encouraged to contact the local Home Instead Senior Care office at 919-479-4600 about adopting groups of seniors.

ANNUAL XMAS TREE FUNDRAISER

SUPPORT TROSA’S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE FUNDRAISER

Durham, NC (November 19, 2007) — TROSA is gearing up its Christmas tree lots for the most festive fundraiser of the season, set to begin Thanksgiving Week. The fundraiser will once again help fund the Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers treatment program, giving hundreds a second chance in life.

TROSA will sell trees in Durham at the following locations:

·

The Streets at Southpoint (Next to Southpoint Cinemas)

·

Northgate Mall (Corner of Club Blvd. & Guess Rd.)

·

4215 University Dr (Kmart parking lot)

·

3301 Hillsborough Road (Advance Auto)

Tree lot hours for most locations will begin the week of Thanksgiving and run until Christmas Eve, every day of the week, from 9am to 10pm. The lot at the Streets of Southpoint will open even earlier at the tree lighting ceremony scheduled for November 17th. For locations and times, visit www.holidaysbytrosa.com. Each lot offers full service sales of gorgeous fraser firs from the NC mountains, plus wreaths, garlands, stands, and other accessories. Tree lot staff will trim, bag, and load each tree, and even fit it to the tree stand, all with a healthy dose of Christmas cheer. You can even pick out your tree, finish your shopping, and then drive your car around to have us load up your tree.

This year’s fundraiser will also help TROSA meet its goal of raising $135,000 to help pay for the TROSA Women’s Residence Hall. If you give an extra donation to TROSA while buying your Christmas tree it could be matched dollar for dollar by the Stewards Fund. Come give a donation and help give a woman at TROSA a safe space to call home.

TROSA serves over 400 people daily in its two-year residential substance abuse treatment program, and is able to fund many of its life changing programs with the help of this annual tree sale and its other respected community services. For more information about TROSA’s programs and services, please visit www.trosainc.org.

Gobbles to Go Program Helps Feed Those In Need

Raleigh Rescue Mission Thanksgiving Feeding Program Brings Holiday Dinner to Shut-ins.

RALEIGH—Thanksgiving Day, Raleigh Rescue Mission expects to deliver approximately 700 meals to persons in need.  “Several years ago we started our Gobbles to Go program to provide holiday meals for those who were housebound, elderly or infirm to help reach more people in our community,” said Director of Public Relations Leslie Currin of Raleigh Rescue Mission.

“This year, the outpouring of community support has provided all the turkeys we need, but we’d be delighted to receive donations of pumpkin pies, cranberry sauce and brown ‘n’ serve rolls,” Currin said.

Begun in 2003, Gobbles to Go uses about 18 volunteers to assemble and package 700 single-serving Thanksgiving dinners.  Another 25 volunteers deliver the still-hot meals to Meals on Wheels recipients and others who call the Gobbles to Go hotline the week before Thanksgiving.

To donate pumpkin pies and other holiday foods to Raleigh Rescue Mission, bring them to 314 E. Hargett Street in Raleigh or make a cash gift for the purchase of holiday food online at www.raleighrescue.org.

For more information, photo opps or interviews, call Leslie Currin, (919) 828-9014, ext. 115 or email LeslieC@raleighrescue.org.

Pajama Donations

ORANGE COUNTY- The North Carolina chapter of the Pajama Program has donated over 200 new pairs of children’s pajamas to the Orange County Department of Social Service’s holiday programs.

Marcey Cring and the Pajama Program have made sure that at least 200 Orange County children will be warm and cozy on December 26th.  The agency has donated 210 pairs of new pajamas to low-income, at-risk children in Orange County.  The Pajama Program is a national not-for-profit organization that provides new, warm pajamas and books to children in need in the United States and around the world.  By providing these pajamas, we hope to create a warm and nurturing bedtime environment for vulnerable youngsters living under difficult circumstances.  We are simply trying to make the holidays a little bit warmer for needy children in our community,” stated Ms. Cring, Chapter President.

The Pajama Program is one of several organizations or individuals that have already answered the call for holiday donations.  However, there are more than 5,000 low-income children in Orange County in need this holiday season.  To try to meet these needs, the Orange County Department of Social Services continues to recruit sponsors and donors for the annual county holiday programs, the Orange County Toy Chest and Share Your Holiday.  The programs, sponsored by the Orange County Department of Social Services in partnership with Toys for Tots and Balloons and Tunes, provide new toys and clothing for low-income, at-risk Orange County children during the holidays.  The agency and its partners recruit donors and sponsors to provide toys, clothing and food to needy Orange County residents.

Anyone interested in donating new children’s toys to the Toy Chest or sponsoring a family through the Share Your Holiday program is encouraged to contact Serena McPherson or Beachy Sanders at (919) 245-2800.  Corporate sponsors can contact Sharron Hinton at (919) 245-2840.  For more information, or to donate to the Pajama Program, please contact Marcey Cring at (919) 402-1363.

What:        Eleven Lowes Foods stores in Wake County are hosting a Friends Feeding Friends Commuter Special to benefit the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.  Special drive-through lanes will be set up outside each store to enable commuters to purchase a $5 bag of food as a donation and get a free breakfast without ever leaving their cars.

The Commuter Special is part of Lowes Foods’ annual Friends Feeding Friends food drive. The goal is to raise 700,000 pounds of food through the food drive, which runs until December 31 at all Lowes Foods stores.

Since Friends Feeding Friends began in 1995, 4 million pounds of food have been collected through the annual event and distributed to organizations that feed the hungry.
