I think that we need to all consider ourselves Americans first and stop thinking of ourselves as Democrats or Republicans. We should look at both parties' platforms and positions and decide which we agree with. And, I think this should not be a one-time thought, but continually. I changed from being a Republican to Democrat years ago, because I thought the GOP had become a party catering to prejudices, and irresponsible fiscal policies. If that changes I will reconsider it. In short, I am tired of this red state/blue state debate. The parties are not sports teams! Let's have allegience to the flag and what it stands for, not any political party.
That noted, I would be surprised if NC goes for Obama, but think that it may be extremely close.
North Carolina has modernized over the decades.
1. We've gone from an economy based on textiles and tobacco to one based on technology and pharmaceuticals. Obama is favored by a more tech-saavy voter.
2. Obama's arguments are rationally stated and backed up by clear documentation. As the state moves from a less educated populace to a more-educated one, Obama's approach receives more favor.
3. The national Democrats are (gulp) conservative! And so are many North Carolinians. Look up the US Office of Management and Budget data to discover that Republican Presidents' budgets increased the national debt by a factor of 10-to-1 year-on-year over the last 30 years, over their Democratic counterparts. It's a fact. The big spenders have been elephants, not donkeys.
4. Except for social conservatism, the McCain campaign is all focused on Obama and his perceived (or fabricated) faults. Obama leads McCain by setting the agenda, and the best game McCain can bring is to slander Obama. The slander has been a pathetic part of the campaign that has lost John McCain a ton of respect.
5. Most North Carolinians are smart, concerned voters. Obama may seem non-traditional, non-conservative, but it's not his great oratory that is persuasive, as much as it is the content of his economic, energy, and foreign policies that make sense. Smart North Carolinians who critically examine both candidates will see this difference.
6. The selection of inexperienced, oil-state, unremarkable Governor Palin really sent a message to the nation. There were literally hundreds of more qualified candidates in the Republican party. After so much positive that John McCain has done, this choice just makes you question his competency and judgement.
I really like McCain the man. If I ever had a chance of voting for McCain, it died when he picked Palin. That was a dumb choice. What was he thinking?!
North Carolina will be blue.
Ben's message reflects the typical liberal view. He thinks we're dumb and we know he's naive. Let's home NC remains RED.
Bill
I have been a Republican for many years until after 2003 when I watched George Bush systematically destroy the country's international credibility and national budget to dramatic proportions. I kept hoping it would turn around, because I AM a fiscal conservative (which pretty much means I believe in paying the checks you write). But Republicans have TALKED conservatism, but not WALKED it.
Honestly, if you believe in the truth, if you respect fact, go to the government web-page of the last 30 years budgets (Office of Management and Budget - you can find the link on Wiki) - or even go back so far as World War II. You will find that the Republicans have exploded the national debt by approximately a factor of 10 over the Dems, with each administrative year in office for presidents. I don't say that, the data does.
Check it out (it's OMB data if you check the source):

As a conservative, if you find an employee talks a good game, but his performance shows the opposite, what do you do? You FIRE him. This has been the case with the Republican presidents - they talk, talk, talk about "tax and spend liberals" but the OMB betrays them with the data.
It took me a while too. I railed against social welfare and "giveaways". But the reality is, Haliburton had a multi-billion dollar give-away when they won a no-bid contract to manage the war in Iraq. In the US, you would be arrested for bid-rigging and racketeering. But it's swept under the rug. Why? Could it have anything to do with our VP being the former CEO?
So-called conservatives are willfully being blind and refusing to demand accountability based on party loyalty and cultural conservatism. You can't keep a job without being accountable. If an employee is willfully negligent, and refuses to change - you fire him. That's how it works.
I know that if I vote Democratic, more of my tax money will be spent in the United States - the country I live in, than in some far away nation in a quasi-civil war. Iraq, who by the way has an 80 billion dollar surplus. Wow - I wonder how THAT happened?
Please conservatives - do the math, check the facts, look at the historical budgets. The Repubs have pulled the wool over your eyes. I don't say that, the data does.
To the writer: Before labeling someone naive, I suggest you check your data.
I was a Republican, too, and migrated toward being a democrat 8 years ago, and then officially registered as one a few years ago. Republicans have not delivered on their promises and they favor the wealthy and big business. Trickle down economics doesn't and hasn't worked and we are paying for it in a big way right now. It's time for regular people to take back the country! That's why I'm voting for Obama. I am also disgusted with McCain's recent misleading advertising. He uses baseless fear to try to win votes. Don't be fooled by his scare tactics. I don't trust him! I think NC could go either way, but really hope it goes Blue.

Here is another website - it is independent. It shows where each candidate's contribution money comes from, at every level, in every race - even the local races.
I checked it and shared a bit with my few ardent Republican family members. McCain's biggest contributors are lobbyists and big oil. Obama's biggest are legal, education, and technology sectors.
It's a great site for info no matter who your choice is.
Ben
I have a sense that the state will stay red by a small margin but the election will go to Obama.. I also sense that the Governor's mansion will most likely turn red this time around. If you believe that "all politics is local" then it is really just a consolation prize to us Democrats if Obama wins and Perdue loses.
I hope that the people in NC use the brains God gave them to read the truth about the candidates and not the slander. McCain has no new programs, he will not be able to help anyone except the top 5% wealthiest people get wealthier and the military boys get killed. If you notice how Obama is focused, honest, patriotic and respectful you might also notice that McCain is not ! He cannot even stay after the town hall debate he so begged for, yet he cannot talk to regular people like you and me ! He so obviously cares not one iota about the middle class since he can't relate to them ~ I used to respect John McCain for his bravery in the pow camp, but now he has sold his soul to the devil and advocates ugliness and hatemongering. This shallow, immature person is certainly nobody I want in the Oval office. He cannot stop showing how disrespectful of our country (and each of us) by NOT addressing the issues, only saying he "wants" to do things but shows no way or how he will do it!? PLEASE people take your heads out of the sand and see him for what he is, a liar and a hatemonger. If Obama does not win, our world will be much worse off than we can imagine, since the world powers of Europe will not help us be the belligerent hater McCain wants us to stay ~ We need OBAMA to bring back the respect we have lost after 8 yrs of ruin by the republican facist regime. Socialism has been part of our country since day one, people, it is nothing new ! But the facism we now have in power has destroyed us nearly completely! By voting for McCain you will complete the destruction. Vote for the HOPE - Vote OBAMA/Biden ~
Red
This state has always been and will always be red.
