Bubblegum Culture

  • It’s Friday, y’all! And even though that slut Hanna threatens to rain all over my weekend parade, I’m still so excited this week is almost over. Why is it that short weeks sometimes feel longer than full weeks?

Anyway, it’s time to take another look back into the annals of pop culture WTF moments.

This week, we travel all the way back to 1993 to remember a very special day in the life of an actress I feel an odd kinship with. Perhaps it’s because we’re both Southern, both 5′ 9″, both born on October 28. Or maybe it’s the fact that we both have abnormally large teeth. Whatever it may be, even though she’s kind of a husband-stealer, I have a bit of a soft spot for Julia Roberts. And in 1993, someone else had a soft spot for her too:

Bless it. Lyle Lovett’s one of those guys who’s so ugly, he’s kinda cute. And apparently, Julia felt the same way as she married him in 1993, after only knowing him for three weeks.

Nice veil, Jules. Is it just me, or does this look like a really awkward prom picture? Anyway, the union lasted for about two years, as the couple split in 1995. Roberts went on to marry Danny Moder, Lovett has been dating girlfriend April Kimble since 1999. Roberts and Lovett remained friends, though, and he even sang a song on the soundtrack to her 1998 movie, Stepmom.

  • Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson are none too thrilled about the McCain campaign co-opting their classic, “Barracuda,” as some sort of anthem for Sarah “Barracuda” Palin.  According to Entertainment Weekly, on Thursday afternoon, Heart e-mailed a statement regarding the use of their song at the Republican National Convention:

“The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission,” it read. “We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored.”

The sisters also gave this statement to EW:

“Sarah Palin’s views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song ‘Barracuda’ no longer be used to promote her image. The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The ‘barracuda’ represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there’s irony in Republican strategists’ choice to make use of it there.”

This reminds me of the 1984 campaign when Ronald Reagan tried to use Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.,” stupidly not realizing what the song was actually about. Good to see the Republicans learning from their mistakes.

  • I’d make a smart-ass remark about Madonna’s fur vest if I the terrifying sight of her arm hadn’t stolen my ability to snark.

  • With the success of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, it looks like Hollywood’s trying to cash in on ’80s nostalgia again, this time with a new Ghostbusters movie. Variety is reporting Columbia Pictures has hired “The Office” co-executive producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to pen a script for the film designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson. No word yet as to whether original director Ivan Reitman will be involved, or if the cast has agreed to commit.

I don’t really know how I feel about this. On the one hand, it’s cool to see all the stuff I grew up with popular again. But it also feels like too much time has elapsed for some of these movies to be made, especially with the original cast. Harrison Ford still did a decent job in the latest Indy movie, but let’s face it, he (and a lot of the rest of these guys) are getting a little too old to play these action stars. I know that Ghostbusters isn’t exactly an action flick, but there’s still a good bit of chasing and such. And of course, I’m terrified to see what kind of CGI mess they’ll come up with for Slimer:

  • Where the hell is PETA? Cause if that ain’t animal cruelty, I don’t know what is.
