Amid rising gas prices, some have floated the idea of a return to a 55 mph national speed limit? Is this a good idea? Why or why not?

The limit is currently too low on many roads across the US , NC included but not at the top of that list . In my close to 40+ years & 3,000,000 miles experience on roads all across the US and 6 other countries low limits below the safe speed slows no one down . I can attest from having lived through the last 55 limit disaster low limits don't work . And that a low posted limits below the 85th percentile accomplish nothing but money put into state coughers from under posted limit enforcement . And low limits damage enforcement of all limits everywhere . Damage that we in NC still suffer from on 2 lane roads that all still are under posted @ 55 across NC , many of which can easily & safely handle 65-70 which is what is enforced and driven today by most across our state .
But thankfully not in many western states is this an issue any longer . All but Oregon in the west have raised their limit to a more appropriate 65-80 mph on all roads that always could handle this speed safely . Oregon passed a 70 law but never posted it .
If we really care about energy consumption a real CAFÉ of 40-50 mpgUS needs to be adopted and enforced . I went from a 5-10 mpg Chevy in 1973 to a 30-40 mpg Toyota when the price spiked during the first oil shock and never looked back . In fact I never slowed down the first time and I wasn't alone on NC roads . And I've not owned a car that achieved below 30-35 mpgUS since , I see all that bought into the SUV craze and now getting what they deserve in fuel costs . Currently I drive a less than 10 year old 50+ mpgUS VW Passat & Jetta turbodiesel and that is @ the speeds we all drive today .
Trying this dumb idea of a lower than will be observed limit again on roads designed to safely handle 70-80 mph will do nothing as it will be 99 % ignored by all again . NCHP never even tried to enforced 55 the first time because it wasn't possible so what makes anyone believe they could this time ????
Again for you clowns that weren't listening , it wasn't enforced & no one drove that slow the first time and will not be this time if we are stupid enough to go down that road again .
speed limit
I really think that the speed limit should be reset at 55mph. Instead of everyone thinking we can do nothing to help ourselves - well here is a good idea and it also might save lives as well. I think we should be taking all measures to produce our own energy and be serious about it. We need to get rid of these vultures and stop being victims.
